The Blue Jays’ minor league teams rebounded (at least most of them did) as the organization had a 5-3 record on Saturday. The teams also saw return engagements continue of Aaron Sanchez (with Dunedin), Ryan Borucki (with Vancouver) and Tom Robson (with the GCL Blue Jays).

 

 

Buffalo Bisons 5, Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders 4

 

Matt Boyd made another start for the Buffalo Bisons and had more mixed results, giving up two more home runs and getting tagged for four runs on seven hits and two walks over six innings. The Bisons still won, getting excellent relief from Joel Pineiro who provided 2 1/3 innings of one-hit ball before Rob Rasmussen and Bobby Korecky each faced one batter to close out the game.

The batters managed to get the job done, despite getting only nine hits overall. All but two of those hits could be accounted for by three players as Matt Hague pushed his batting average to .348 with a 3/4 game, driving in a run. Alex Hassan was 2/4 with two doubles and Andy Burns was 2/4 with a double, an RBI and a run. Luke Scott was 1/1 with an RBI and a walk before coming out of the game for Ryan Schimpf and Melky Mesa was 1/4 with two runs.

New Hampshire Fisher Cats 4, New Britain Rock Cats 2

 

The New Hampshire Fisher Cats bounced back from their loss to get a great start from John Anderson, beating the New Britain Rock Cats 4-2. Anderson earned his fifth win of the year, giving up two runs on five hits (including a solo home run) and one walk over seven innings while striking out four. Colt Hynes and Danny Barnes finished the game with one inning of perfect work each, striking out one.

Matt Newman led the offense, going 2/4 with his sixth home run of the year while Eastern League All-Star Jorge Flores was 2/4 with an RBI. Emilio Guerrero, in his first game back in Double-A, was 1/3 with a double and a walk while Jon Berti was 1/4 with a walk and three stolen bases.

Roster Notes: Emilio Guerrero was promoted back to New Hampshire and Andy Fermin was sent back down to Dunedin.

Dunedin Blue Jays 6, Jupiter Hammerheads 4

 

The Jupiter Hammerheads made a late charge but the Dunedin Blue Jays held them off, securing a 6-4 win on Saturday. Aaron Sanchez made the start, going 2 2/3 innings and giving up one run on three hits and two walks with two strikeouts. Jeremy Gabryszwski earned the win, allowing two runs (one earned) on only four hits and one walk with three strikeouts over five innings and Alberto Tirado picked up the save, giving up a run on three walks with two strikeouts over 1 1/3 innings.

The offense was churning but it wasn’t very efficient, leaving 10 men on base despite hitting .333 with runners in scoring position. Christian Lopes pushed his batting average to .294 with a 3/3 game that included a double, a walk, an RBI and two runs. Jonathan Davis (J.D.) was 2/5 with a double while Matt Dean was also 2/5 with two runs and an RBI. everyone else got at least one hit with Derrick Loveless driving home two with a double and a walk.

Roster Notes: Aaron Sanchez was moved to the Dunedin roster to continue his rehab while Luis Santos was activated off the DL and Jairo Labourt was placed on the temporarily inactive list to participate in the MLB Futures Game.

Lansing Lugnuts 3, Dayton Dragons 4

 

The Lansing Lugnuts tried to come back from a 4-0 deficit, scoring three times in the ninth inning but the Dayton Dragons held them off for a 4-3 win on Saturday. Starlyn Suriel wasn’t sharp, allowing four runs on nine hits and two walks over 4 1/3 innings but Colton Turner gave the Lugnuts a chance. Turner entered the game with the bases loaded and one out in the fifth inning but bolted the door shut, getting a strikeout and a groundout to get out the inning and he remained in the game, keeping the Dragons off the scoreboard the rest of the way.

David Harris had another great game, going 2/4 with two doubles and all three of the Lugnuts’ RBI. D.J. Davis (1/4), Dawel Lugo (1/4), Chris Carlson (1/4, BB) and Jason Leblebijian (1/3, BB) had the club’s other hits.

Vancouver Canadians 2, Salem-Keizer Volcanoes 4

 

The Salem-Keizer Volcanoes have had the Vancouver Canadians’ number as they’ve held them to three runs or less for the first three games of their series. Ryan Borucki made his return to Vancouver, pitching two-plus solid innings, allowing a run on four hits but didn’t walk anyone and struck out three. Turner Lee provided allowed one of Borucki’s inherited runners to score in the third inning but didn’t allow any of his own. Jonathan Harris had a rough outing, putting up a lot of three on the stat sheet, giving up three runs on three hits and three walks with three strikeouts over 2 2/3 innings. Brandon Hinkle provided 2 1/3 innings of scoreless relief while Andrew Case put a zero in the ninth.

The Canadians only had three hits and three walks, getting a double from Lane Thomas (1/3, RBI) and Ryan Metzler (1/4, R) and a single from Carl Wise.

Roster Notes: Daniel Lietz and Joe Claver were sent down to Bluefield.

Bluefield Blue Jays 2, Princeton Rays 3

 

The Bluefield Blue Jays lost another 3-2 game, this time to the Princeton Rays as they struggle to find their footing. Angel Perdomo went six innings and allowing only one run on four hits and one walk with five strikeouts but Miguel Burgos took the loss, allowing two more runs over his three innings.

Christian Williams had himself a day, falling a triple short of the cycle and going 4/4 with two singles, a double and a home run. The rest of the club, however, only had three hits.

Roster Notes: John Kravetz, Joe Claver and Daniel Lietz were assigned to the Bluefield Blue Jays and Edwin Fuentes was released.

GCL Blue Jays 7, GCL Yankees1 4

 

Tom Robson got another rehab outing in, giving up four hits but no runs and the young Canadian struck out a pair on his road back from Tommy John surgery as the GCL Blue Jays rode to a win. Denis Diaz gave up three runs relieving Robson over three innings of work and Griffin Glaude allowed another run over two innings. Mike Estevez and Ryan Cook finished the game with a scoreless inning each.

The offense rapped out 10 hits, getting two from offensive studs (at least so far in the GCL) Reggie Pruitt and Kalik May. Pruitt was 2/5 with a double and a run but was caught stealing while May was 2/4 with a double, an RBI and a run, taking a walk as well. Ryan Hissey (1/4) and Levi Scott contributed a double and a RBI each while Jesus Severino was 1/3 with three RBI and a walk.

Roster Notes: John Kravetz was sent up to Bluefield.

DSL Blue Jays 9, DSL Padres 4

 

The DSL Blue Jays are getting good at capitalizing on another team’s errors, scoring nine runs on just seven hits as the Padres let a game get away by committing four errors on Saturday. Enmanuel Moreta had two hits including a home run, driving in a pair of runs and scoring a pair for the Blue Jays while Sterling Guzman hit his first home run, going 1/4 with two RBI and two runs.

Jose Nova was outstanding in the start for the Blue Jays, going six innings of two-hit, one-walk ball, holding the Padres off the board while striking out seven. Tommy Henriquez was tagged for four unearned run in his inning of work and Joel Espinal struck out three in two perfect innings.
