The Toronto Blue Jays fell behind to the Tampa Bay Rays early in Friday’s game but surged in the late innings to make the game a closer 11-7 loss that it would have been feared earlier.

 

Trent Thornton was beat up in his third start, allowing five runs on eight hits that included three home runs while walking two and striking out three in three innings. Sam Gaviglio relieved him to allow a run on two hits in three innings with two strikeouts and Elvis Luciano gave up two runs in his inning, allowing a home run among two hits with two walks and a strikeout. Daniel Hudson didn’t allow a run, walking one in the eighth and Javy Guerra melted down, allowing four hits, including a home run, and a walk to total three more runs for the Rays, striking out two in the ninth.

 

 

Luke Maile led the offensive charge, going 2/4 with a home run in the seventh and two RBI while Freddy Galvis was 1/5 with a double but struck out four times. Lourdes Gurriel Jr. was 1/2 with two RBI and a double, scoring a run and Teoscar Hernandez was 2/4 with a double, an RBI and a run. Randal Grichuk was 1/3 with a walk and a run and Justin Smoak was 0/3 but walked twice and scored both times. Richard Urena, who will be optioned to Buffalo to make room on the roster for Clay Buchholz, was 1/4 and Alen Hanson was 1/3 with a walk, an RBI and a run.

 

Clay Buchholz makes his Blue Jays debut on Saturday at 3:07pm against Blake Snell and the Tampa Bay Rays.
