Tolleson Back with the Blue Jays

The Toronto Blue Jays have made a couple of more roster moves early this morning. The move involved placing Michael Saunders back on the 15-day DL due to swelling in his knee. While this is a disappointment to fans who were hoping to get Saunders back in the lineup for more than a few games, it’s probably better that he takes some time to recover rather than occupy a roster spot at the big league level without being able to play.

To fill Saunders’s spot, the Blue Jays selected the contract of Steven Tolleson. Yes, that Steve Tolleson who the Blue Jays designated for assignment on April 25. Tolleson cleared waivers and elected free agency, only to sign back with the Blue Jays on a minor league contract. Obviously that decision has paid off for Tolleson as he’ll be back in the bigs, collecting that paycheque after just two games with the Buffalo Bisons.

To make room on the 40-man roster, the Blue Jays designated Preston Guilmet for assignment knowing full well that he’s probably not going to clear waivers either. Guilmet has been one of the best relievers in the Buffalo ‘pen, throwing 14 1/3 innings and allowing just two runs on 10 hits and three walks with 12 strikeouts.

We’ll have to wait and see but it’s more than likely that the Blue Jays will sell Guilmet to another team, like they did with Andy Wilkins and Matt West, both of whom were sold to the Dodgers.

On Friday, the Blue Jays made another move, sending Chad Jenkins back down to the Buffalo Bisons and promoting reliever Ryan Tepera. While I’m pretty disappointed to see Jenkins go back to Buffalo, I’m happy for Tepera who has looked extremely good in relief this year with the Buffalo Bisons. In the one appearance I saw, he was throwing mostly cutters at about 91 mph and only sparingly used his 94-mph fourseam fastball or his breaking ball (which a scout that I was sitting with was keen to see).

What do you think about these moves? Is it bad management that the Blue Jays will likely lose another “bubble guy” to bring back Tolleson? Would you rather see Jenkins than Tepera?
