The Blue Jays’ minor league affiliates only won one of four games on Friday but it was won in a big way thanks to massive games from several Dunedin Blue Jays’ hitters and a rare minor league complete game from the pitcher.

 

Buffalo Bisons 0, Toledo Mud Hens 8

 

A day after the Buffalo Bisons scored 13 runs against the Columbus Clippers, Daniel Norris and the Toledo Mud Hens cooled the Bisons’ bats as they could only manage six hits in an 8-0 loss. While Norris, the former Blue Jay and Bison struck out eight over six innings, current Bison Scott Diamond allowed five runs on eight hits and two walks over five innings, striking out two. Pat McCoy was charged with the other three runs in one inning while Aaron Loup gave up a hit over 2/3 of an inning and left a man on for Pat Venditte who struck out the only batter he faced. Dustin Antolin finished the game with a scoreless eighth. The defensive highlight for the Bisons was the triple play turned by David Adams, Andy Burns and Matt Dominguez in the fourth inning.

On the offensive side, the Bisons had just six hits including one each from Dalton Pompey, Andy Burns, Jesus Montero, Darrell Ceciliani, Tony Sanchez and Jio Mier.

Roster Notes: Arnold Leon was released (to sign with Sumsung Lions in Korea) and Colt Hynes was sent down to New Hampshire.

 

 

New Hampshire Fisher Cats 8, Reading Fightin Phils 9

 

It took 13 innings but the Reading Fightin Phils got the best of the New Hampshire Fisher Cats. The two clubs scored in bunches in the first, with each of them scoring four runs until the Fisher Cats took a 7-4 lead after a three-run outburst in the sixth (courtesy of Christian Lopes‘s three-run home run). Jeremy Gabryszwski, who allowed four runs on seven hits and a walk with three strikeouts was in line for the win thanks to his seven innings of work. Chris Smith provided a scoreless eighth, striking out two batters but Wil Browning blew his second save in as many days, giving up three hits (including a three-run home run) that tied the game in the ninth. Danny Barnes finished the inning and threw two more without giving up a hit or a walk over 2 2/3 innings, striking out four. Brady Dragmire came in in the 12th, allowing a run in the 12th and one more in the 13th inning to take the loss.

Lopes was responsible for four RBI, with an RBI single in the first to go with his three-run home run (giving him a 2/4 day). Wilkin Castillo had a 2/5 game and also walked twice and threw out two of three potential base stealers while newly signed Ryan Lavarnway was 2/5 with a run, two RBI and a walk. Roemon Fields was 2/4 with an RBI, two walks and a run, adding his 16th stolen base.

Roster Notes: The Blue Jays signed Ryan Lavarnway and assigned him to New Hampshire while they released K.C. Hobson. Colt Hynes was sent down to New Hampshire from Buffalo while Daniel Schlereth was assigned to Vancouver (i.e., extended spring training) in a move that could precede his opting out of his contract.

 

Dunedin Blue Jays 13, Daytona Tortugas 1

 

The Dunedin Blue Jays thoroughly dominated the Daytona Tortugas in every aspect of the game to earn a 13-1 victory. Starting pitcher Francisco Rios needed just 91 pitches to throw a complete game at Daytona, striking out three but getting 12 outs on the ground and giving up seven hits and one walk.

The offense was running smoothly on all cylinders, getting hits from everyone except for Jonathan Davis and Michael De La Cruz. Davis still walked and managed to score twice. Ryan McBroom led the attack with three hits and fell just a triple short of the cycle, blasting his eighth home run of the year, driving in three runs and scoring twice. Derrick Loveless continues to be hot, falling just a home run short of the cycle, going 3/5 with three RBI and two runs. Emilio Guerrero was 3/4 with two doubles, an RBI and a run while L.B. Dantzler (2/4, 2B, BB, RBI, R), Richard Urena (2/5, 2B, RBI, 2 R), and Anthony Alford (2/5, 2B, RBI, R) had two hits each.

Lansing Lugnuts 2, South Bend Cubs 4

 

Despite a big day from catcher Ryan Hissey, the Lugnuts couldn’t overcome a 4-2 lead by the South Bend Cubs. Hissey had two of the Lugnuts’ five hits, adding a walk and hitting a home run. Justin Atkinson and J.C. Cardenas each hit a double while Max Pentecost was 1/4 with three strikeouts.

Tayler Saucedo got the start and was solid, allowing two runs on seven hits and two walks over five innings with one strikeout. Ryan Cook was a big more prolific with the Ks, striking out four batters in three innings but he walked three and gave up two hits, getting charged with two runs.
