May 17, 2016 Minor League Report

Winning ways are hard to come by for the Blue Jays’ minor league teams, perhaps in a hangover from the talent purge at the 2015 trade deadline. The clubs were 1-3 on Tuesday, getting a win from the Dunedin Blue Jays and losses from everyone else.

Buffalo Bisons 1, Toledo Mud Hens 7

 

Former Blue Jay Thad Weber pitched well against the Buffalo Bisons, holding them to just one unearned run over 7 1/3 innings while the Bisons’ bullpen squandered another excellent outing from Wade LeBlanc. “Gandalf” LeBlanc provided the wizardry that we’re becoming accustomed to, tossing 6 1/3 innings, allowing one unearned run on seven hits and two walks with six strikeouts. Ben Rowen finished the seventh inning, stranding two runners but Bo Schultz, gmaking his first Buffalo rehab appearance, allowed three runs (two earned) in 1/3 of an inning, giving up three hits and a walk. Bobby Korecky put out the fire, stranding a runner but getting hit in the next inning, allowing three runs (two earned) in 1 1/3 innings with a walk and a strikeout. Colt Hynes finished the game with a strikeout.

With eight hits, the offense was relatively quiet with four different players getting two hits each. Dalton Pompey extended his hitting streak to nine games, going 2/4 with a stolen base. Alexi Casilla was 2/4 with a run and two stolen bases while Matt Dominguez was 2/4 with two singles and Domonic Brown was 2/3 with a walk.

Roster Notes: Dustin Antolin and Andy Burns were sent back down to Buffalo while Pat Venditte and Jimmy Paredes were called up to Toronto.

 

 

New Hampshire Fisher Cats 5, Portland Sea Dogs 3

 

The New Hampshire Fisher Cats scored two runs late on a two-run home run by catcher Jorge Saez but it wasn’t enough to overcome a four-run deficit in a 5-3 loss to the Portland Sea Dogs. Lefty John Anderson got the start, logging six innings with three runs against on seven hits and two walks with one strikeout. John Stilson struck out a pair in an inning but allowed two runs on two hits, a hit batter and a wild pitch. Daniel Schlereth pitched a perfect ninth with two strikeouts.

Saez was 2/4 with the home run, his first in Double-A, and two RBI. Rowdy Tellez was also 2/4 while Roemon Fields was 1/4 with a run and a stolen base.

Dunedin Blue Jays 4, Fort Myers Miracle 0

 

In a matinee affair, the Dunedin Blue Jays got spectacular pitching and enough hitting to beat the Fort Myers Miracle 4-0. Francisco Rios was dominant, allowing just two hits and no walks on 90 pitches with 60 strikes in seven innings, racking up six strikeouts. Aaron Loup walked two and struck out one in his 2/3 of an inning while Carlos Ramirez picked up his third save with 1 1/3 innings of scoreless ball, allowing one hit and striking out one.

Also on the rehab front, Devon Travis was 2/3 with a walk and three RBI as the DH whle Emilio Guerrero was 2/3. Ryan McBroom hit a double and Derrick Loveless hit a triple and drove in a run.

Lansing Lugnuts 3, Fort Wayne TinCaps 4

 

The Lansing Lugnuts came up just short in their series opener against the Fort Wayne TinCaps, losing 4-3. Tayler Saucedo got the start, allowing four runs on five hits and three walks in 6 2/3 innings with four strikeouts. Starlyn Suriel finished with 1 1/3 innings of one-hit ball, striking out one.

The Lugnuts spread out their offense, getting one hit from everyone in the lineup. Juan Kelly had the biggest blow, hitting a home run while Aaron Attaway hit a double and took a walk. Gunnar Heidt was 1/3 with an RBI and two stolen bases.
