Blue Jays Blank Brewers 2-0 To Wrap Up Spring Training

Thomas Pannone

The Blue Jays’ pitching staff put their best foot forward in Montreal as they blanked the Milwaukee Brewers in a 2-0 win in Toronto’s final tune up for the regular season.

Thomas Pannone made a strong impression, improving his case to make the Opening Day roster and went two solid innings without giving up any home runs, allowing two hits and a walk while striking out one. Javy Guerra followed, also making a solid case to be a candidate to come up from the minors, tossing two innings and giving up just one hit with two strikeouts.

Danny Barnes upped the ante, striking out three in his two innings without giving up a hit and walking only one. Justin Shafer tossed an inning, giving up two hits and a walk while Conor Fisk walked one and struck out one in 2/3 of an inning. Kirby Snead came on and struck out Eric Thames to end the end and Ben Gamel to start the ninth. Zach Jackson got a groundout and a flyout to end the game for the Brewers and kept the shutout intact.

The Blue Jays were held off the board until the seventh inning when Cavan Biggio walked with one out. Patrick Cantwell singled and, after Kevin Smith struck out, Roemon Fields beat out an infield single to load the bases and Eric Sogard reached on what was scored an infield hit but a throwing error by second baseman Keston Hiura allowed both Biggio and Cantwell to score, giving the Jays a 2-0 lead.

Brandon Drury was 1/2 and Josh Palacios had an infield hit off of former Blue Jays minor leaguer Angel Perdomo. Kevin Pillar was 1/2 and Roemon Fields was 1/1. Freddy Galvis had the Blue Jays’ other hit.

The Blue Jays have Wednesday off before starting the 2019 regular season at home against the Detroit Tigers on Thursday with Marcus Stroman making his second Opening Day start.
