The Toronto Blue Jays split their mini two-game series with the Boston Red Sox but the offense showed promising signs as the Red Sox walked off with a 7-6 win on Thursday
Freddy Galvis continues to be the unlikely straw that stirs the Jays’ offensive drink, giving himself a .395 batting average (and 1.179 OPS) with a 4/4 day that included his fourth home run of the season. Rowdy Tellez also hit a moon shot, originally estimated to be 505 feet (which would have been the longest home run ever in Fenway back) but estimate was taken back, giving him just a big home run as part of a 2/4 day that had him driving in two runs. Justin Smoak, back in the lineup after missing a few games with a sore neck, was able to just worry about swinging lefthanded (it was the righthanded swing that was giving him more problems) and popped a massive three-run home run to center field in the third inning and added a walk. Lourdes Gurriel Jr. had a strong game, going 1/2 with two walks.
Aaron Sanchez started for the Jays and he allowed four runs but only one was earned. He struggled with his control, walking four and throwing three wild pitches and also gave up five hits and struck out five. Tim Mayza threw a perfect sixth and Joe Biagini allowed a run on a solo home run, walking one and striking out one in 2/3 of an inning before Thomas Pannone retired the only batter he faced to get out of the seventh. Javy Guerra continued his strong work early in the season with a scoreless eighth, striking out one. It was the closer, Ken Giles, who has been so reliable this season, who gave up the winning runs, allowing two hits and three walks in the bottom of the ninth, getting just one out.
The Blue Jays return home on Friday to face the 10-3 Tampa Bay Rays with Trent Thornton kicking off the series against Ryne Stanek.
