On a Sunday, when the lowest minor league teams rest, the Blue Jays’ affiliates were 2-4 with only one really great pitching performance.

Buffalo Bisons 2, Gwinnett Braves 0

Shutout time! The Buffalo Bisons beat the Gwinnett Braves by keeping them off the board, thanks to a strong start from Scott Copleand. Copeland allowed eight hits and one walk, striking out one but also retired 10 batters through groundouts and only on flyouts over his seven innings, picking up his ninth win of the season with Buffalo. Ben Rowen and Joba Chamberlain each threw a scoreless inning to finish the game. The offense didn’t need to do much with Jonathan Diaz (0/2, BB) picking up an RBI along with Alex Hassan (1/4). Ty Kelly was 2/4 with a double and a run and International League MVP candidate Matt Hague was 2/4.

Roster Notes: Munenori Kawasaki was optioned back to Buffalo and Ezequiel Carrera accepted his assignment to Buffalo.

New Hampshire Fisher Cats 0, Bowie Baysox 8

The New Hampshire Fisher Cats were shutout for the second game in a row, only picking up four hits against the Bowie Baysox. Kevin Nolan hit a double and Emilio Guerrero hit a triple in the loss. Scott Barnes had the start and allowed four runs (three earned) over six innings but only walked one and struck out five. John Anderson allowed three runs over one inning and Luis Perez allowed another run in his inning of work.

Roster Notes: OF Melky Mesa was sent back to New Hampshire

Player of the Game: None

Dunedin Blue Jays 7, Brevard County Manatees 6

Anthony Alford
Anthony Alford

Anthony Alford was the man of the hour, going 4/5 and driving home the winning run in walkoff fashion for the Dunedin Blue Jays. Alford missed the cycle by a home run, scored once and drove in two. Matt Dean was 2/4 with a double and Andy Fermin was 2/3 with his first home run with the D-Jays this year, driving in two. Derrick Loveless was 1/2 with a home run and two walks and Jonathan Davis (J.D.) was 1/4 with his first Dunedin dinger of the year.

Jeremy Gabryszwski was roughed up to the tune of five runs (four earned) on nine hits over five innings, striking out five. The bullpen was solid as Matt Dermody allowed two hits and a walk but no runs in two innings and Chris Smith, despite allowing one run and blowing the save, held it there, allowing the Jays to come away with the win.

Roster Notes: Rowdy Tellez was placed on the DL and Scott Silverstein was assigned to the GCL Blue Jays for rehab. Jason Leblebijian was promoted to Dunedin from Lansing while Richard Urena was sent back to Lansing.

Player of the Game: Anthony Alford

Starter Chase Mallard couldn’t follow up his last stellar outing and was shelled for two home runs among 10 hits and gave up six runs over five innings. Tim Mayza struck out six over 2 2/3 innings, allowing a run on a hit and two walks while Jose Fernandez gave up two more runs over 1 1/3 innings.

Chris Carlson was 3/5 with a triple and an RBI while Juan Kelly was 3/4 with a home run.

Roster Notes: Richard Urena was sent back to Lansing and Jason Leblebijian was promoted to Dunedin. Boomer Collins was promoted to Dunedin.

Player of the Game: Juan Kelly and Chris Carlson

Vancouver Canadians 3, Everett Aquasox 6

The Vancouver offense is not the club’s strong point as they only had seven hits and scored three times. Ryan Hissey was 2/3 with an RBI and a walk for the only multi-hit game on the squad. 2015 first rounder Jonathan Harris allowed four runs on five hits and three walks in four innings before Sean Ratcliffe allowed two runs (one earned) in his inning. Brandon Hinkle was very good, giving up just a hit and a walk with two strikeouts in two innings while Josh DeGraaf allowed three hits but no runs in two innings.

Player of the Game: Ryan Hissey

Bluefield Blue Jays 5, Elizabethton Twins 6

Despite only six hits, the Blue Jays took advantage of four errors by the Elizabethton Twins but still couldn’t overcome the home team’s six runs. Matt Morgan had himself a day, going 3/3 with two doubles, a walk and two RBI. Freddy Rodriguez also drove in a pair of runs. Angel Perdomo allowed four runs on 10 hits and two walks in just 3 1/3 innings. Jackson Lowery went 2 2/3 strong innings, allowing just one hit and striking out four before Tyler Burden took the loss, allowing two runs over two innings.
