August 19 Minor League Report

In one of the worst days in the Jays’ minor leagues in recent memory, all of the Blue Jays’ North America-based affiliates lost, mostly very convincingly. It was up to the DSL Blue Jays to keep the night from being a complete write off.

Buffalo Bisons 0, Rochester Red Wings 6

 

Starting off our recap is the Buffalo Bisons’ whitewashing at the hands of the Rochester Red Wings. Dalton Pompey had two of the Bisons’ six hits. Phillippe Aumont was yanked from the game after walking six batters and allowing four runs over two innings, throwing 66 pitches in the process. Greg Burke pitched two scoreless innings and was followed by Aaron Loup who allowed two runs on four hits in 1 1/3 innings. Ben Rowen finished that inning with a walk and nothing else while Ryan Tepera and Steve Delabar threw a scoreless frame each to end the game.

New Hampshire Fisher Cats 6, Reading Fightin Phils 12

 

Despite four home runs from the New Hampshire Fisher Cats, the Reading Fightin Phils got twice as many runs and doubled up on the ‘Cats 12-6. K.C. Hobson went yard, adding a double and going 2/4 with two runs while Jorge Flores hit his second home run in as many games, driving in two. Ryan Schimpf hit his fifth dinger in six games, going 1/4 while Dwight Smith, Jr. hit his sixth of the year, a solo shot.

Casey Lawrence was hit hard, allowing eight runs on 12 hits and a walk over 3 2/3 innings with five strikeouts. Danny Barnes also gave up three runs over 2 1/3 innings. John Anderson pitched a clean seventh while Blake McFarland got tagged for a run on two hits in the eighth.

Roster Notes: Matt Newman was activated off the DL and Ian Parmley was sent down to Dunedin.

Dunedin Blue Jays 2, Clearwater Threshers 6

 

The Dunedin Blue Jays got a ringing home run from Anthony Alford (his second with Dunedin) but little else as they fell to the Clearwater Threshers 6-2. Boomer Collins added two hits while Derrick Loveless was 1/3 with a walk and an RBI. Andy Fermin scored the other run, going 1/3 with a walk.

Derek Blacksher made his first start for the D-Jays, allowing four runs (two earned) on seven hits and a walk over five innings despite striking out six. Griffin Murphy struggled, allowing two run son three hits and three walks in two innings while Arik Sikula and Wil Browning finished the game with a scoreless inning each.

Roster Notes: J.D. Davis was placed on the DL and Ian Parmley was demoted from the Fisher Cats to take his roster spot. RHP Lendy Castillo, a 26 year old who was playing in the Texas system, was assigned to Dunedin.

Lansing Lugnuts 1, Lake County Captains 10

 

David Harris accounted for the only Lansing run, slamming a solo home run in the fifth inning. Danny Jansen returned to action with a hit in three at bats while Christian Vazquez and Richard Urena had the only other hits for the Lugnuts.

All of the pitchers were victimized by the Lake County offense. Sean Reid-Foley only walked one in his return to the Lugnuts but he gave up two home runs, allowing four runs (three earned) on four hits with four strikeouts in five innings. Mark Biggs gave up three runs (two earned) over two innings while Jose Fernandez allowed three runs in two innings.

Vancouver Canadians 2, Tri-City Dust Devils 6

 

In an afternoon game, the Vancouver Canadians couldn’t contain the Tri-City Dust Devils, losing 6-2 on Wednesday. Jonathan Harris allowed two runs in just two innings while Bob Wheatley gave up a run in an inning. Despite striking out seven, Angel Perdomo allowed three runs over three innings, giving up a home run among four hits and two walks. Michael Kraft held things together for the final three innings, but allowed two hits and three walks with one strikeout.

The offense only had eight hits with Sean Hurley going 2/4 with a double and an RBI. Juan Kelly, returning to Vancouver, was 1/2 with two walks.

Roster Notes: C Juan Kelly was sent down to Vancouver from Lansing.

Bluefield Blue Jays

GCL Blue Jays 2, GCL Yankees2 4

 

The GCL Blue Jays couldn’t score enough runs, giving up four and falling to the Yankees2 squad. Jose Espada started and gave up three runs (two earned) over four innings while Jose Nova allowed just one run over four innings of his own. Gunner Eastman finished the game with a scoreless ninth.

Jake Thomas had two hits and a run while Lance Jones walked twice. Juandy Mendoza and Owen Spiwak each went 1/3 with an RBI.

DSL Blue Jays 8, DSL Orioles1 1

 

The DSL Blue Jays kept scoring all game as they defeated the Orioles1 squad by a score of 8-1, scoring in six of the nine innings. Norberto Obeso had a fantastic game, going 5/5 with a double, an RBI and two runs scored. Yorman Rodriguez hit his second home run of the year, going 2/5 with two RBI and a run while Antony Fuentes (2/5, 2B, 3B, 2 RBI, R) and Manuel Herazo (2/3, 2 BB, RBI, R) had two hits each. Sam Buelens was on twice with a single and a walk.

Jonathan Torres had a solid outing, giving up just two hits and two walks (and one run) over 6 1/3 innings, striking out five and Guillermo De La Cruz pitched 2 2/3 perfect innings, striking out one to finish the game.
