August 1, 2021 Toronto Blue Jays Minor League Report

In four games, the Toronto Blue Jays affiliates were 2-2 on Sunday, finishing off the full-season teams’ series.

Buffalo Bisons 1, Worcester Red Sox (BOS) 8

The Buffalo Bisons (45-29) concluded their rough series against the Worcester Red Sox, losing 8-1.

Starter Zach Logue struggled, giving up five runs (two earned) on six hits and a walk with one strikeout in four innings to take the loss. Tommy Milone allowed a run on one hit (one HR) with one strikeout in 1 2/3 innings and Jeremy Beasley allowed two runs (one earned) on a hit and two walks in 1 1/3 innings. Kirby Snead finished it, striking out one in the eighth.

Kevin Smith had a pair of doubles, going 2/5 while Tyler White was 2/5 with a double and an RBI. Forrest Wall was 2/5 and Corey Dickerson was 1/5. Cullen Large and Richard Urena were each 1/3 with a walk and Dilson Herrera was 1/3 while catcher Anthony Morales was 1/4 with a run.

Roster Notes: Tayler Saucedo and Thomas Hatch were optioned to Buffalo.

New Hampshire Fisher Cats 7, Portland Sea Dogs (BOS) 6

The New Hampshire Fisher Cats (35-39) finished their week-long series with the Portland Sea Dogs by winning 7-6 and holding off a charging Sea Dogs team who closed the gap to one run with three in the bottom of the ninth.

Playing shortstop for a change was Kevin Vicuna who went back to his natural position and went 3/5 with a double, two runs and a stolen base. Nick Podkul was 2/2 with two walks, three RBI and a run while Tanner Kirwer was 2/4 with a double, an RBI, a run and was picked off. Chavez Young was 1/4 with an RBI and a stolen base while Samad Taylor was 0/4 but walked, drove in a run and stole a base. Otto Lopez walked twice but was 0/3 with a run and Jordan Groshans was 1/5 with a double and an RBI. LJ Talley was 1/5 with two runs and Chris Bec was 1/3 with a walk.

Maximo Castillo had a solid start, allowing three runs on seven hits with one walk and five strikeouts in six innings to pick up his eighth win. Mike Ellenbest was solid in a scoreless inning, giving up a hit and Fitz Stadler struck out one in his inning. Graham Spraker ran into trouble in the ninth, allowing three runs on four hits (two HR) with a strikeout in 2/3 of an inning before Emerson Jimenez locked down the save, getting a pop out on two pitches to finish the game.

Vancouver Canadians 6, Spokane Indians (COL) 3

The Vancouver Canadians (35-43) scored three runs in the top of the ninth inning to beat the Spokane Indians 6-3.

Left fielder Zac Cook hit his first home run for Vancouver, and Philip Clarke had three hits, including a home run, in the win. Clarke was 3/4 with the big blast in the fourth, a double, a walk and three RBI, scoring a run while Cook was 1/4 with the solo home run, a walk and a stolen base. Tanner Morris was 2/4 with a walk and a run and Spencer Horwitz was 2/4 with a walk, a double and two runs. Rafael Lantigua was 1/5 and Will Robertson was 1/4 with an outfield assist. Ronny Brito was 1/5 with an RBI and D.J. Neal was 1/2 with a walk and a run.

Nick Fraze was the starter and he contributed four hitless innings, striking out four and retiring all 12 batters he faced. Brandon Eisert pitched one inning and gave up three runs on four hits (two HR) with a strikeout and Adrian Hernandez struck out four in two innings while Justin Maese picked up the win, walking one and striking out one in the final two innings.

Dunedin Blue Jays 3, Bradenton Marauders (PIT) 4

The Dunedin Blue Jays’ (34-43) were edged out by the Bradenton Marauders 4-3 on Sunday.

Shortstop Orelvis Martinez had two hits, going 2/4 with two RBI while Willfrann Astudillo also had a pair of hits, going 2/3 with a run. PK Morris was 1/4 with a double, an RBI and a run while Miguel Hiraldo and Steward Berroa were each 1/3 with a walk.

On the mound, it was Naswell Paulino getting the start and he allowed four runs on five hits (one HR) with a walk and six strikeouts over five innings. Elixon Caballero (1 IP, 1 H, 1 K), Jol Concepcion (1 IP, 2 K) and Juan De Paula (1 IP, 1 K) finished it off for the Blue Jays.
