Four games were actually played in Bluejaysland (not counting the big league boys) and the affiliates came away with just one win. While the Lansing Lugnuts managed to get their first game of the season in, the New Hampshire Fisher Cats were snowed out again.

The Buffalo Bisons picked up their first win of the season on Saturday, beating the Pawtucket Red Sox 3-1 in the first half of a double header. Scott Diamond picked up his first win in a Bisons uniform, throwing five strong innings, allowing one run on four hits and no walks with five strikeouts. Pat Venditte threw a scoreless sixth, striking out the side in order while Aardsma worked a 1-2-3 seventh to earn his first save, striking out one.

Domonic Brown was the offensive sparkplug, going 2/3 with a double and a home run while Casey Kotchman was 2/3 with a double and two RBI.

Game 2 of the double header was a different story as the Bisons couldn’t keep the Red Sox down after taking a 3-2 lead in the second inning, eventually falling 4-3 to the host team. Chad Jenkins was pressed into starting duty after Scott Copeland was sold to a team in Korea and allowed two runs on five hits in 2 1/3 innings. He was succeeded by Chad Girodo who went 1 2/3, giving up a hit and a walk with two strikeouts and stranding two runners while Ryan Tepera allowed two hits and was charged with a run in just 1/3 of an inning. Pat McCoy took the loss with two innings of one-run, three-hit relief, striking out two and allowing one of Tepera’s runners to score.

Humberto Quintero was 2/2 with two doubles and a run while Domonic Brown drove in two more runs with a hit. Andy Burns and Darrell Ceciliani both registered their first hits of the year.

Dunedin Blue Jays 5, Clearwater Threshers 9

Taking their first loss of the season, the Dunedin Blue Jays couldn’t recover from some early struggles by starter Ryan Borucki and fell to the Clearwater Threshers by a 9-5 score. Borucki, to his credit, appeared to recover from a rough first two batters. While Scott Kingery led off the game with a double and Drew Stankiewicz followed with a triple, Borucki got three consecutive ground outs to get out of the inning with minimal damage. He also escaped trouble in the second after giving up a single and a walk before getting a pop out and a double play. The wheels fell off in the third, however, with the Threshers getting four more runs on two home runs, two other hits and a walk, but Borucki righted himself, getting the side in order in the fourth. Another three runs followed in the fifth (with two charged to Borucki) and Carlos Ramirez came in to clean things up, finishing the inning and going two more with one run of his own allowed and striking out five. Matt Dermody finished the game with two scoreless innings, allowing two hits and striking out four. Borucki finished with eight runs allowed in 4 1/3 innings with just one strikeout.

On the offensive side of the ball, Richard Urena continues his hot start, going 2/4 with a double and a run while Jonathan Davis (a.k.a. J.D.) drove in three runs with a double, a home run and two runs scored. Ryan McBroom drove in another run, going 1/4.

Lansing Lugnuts 4, Great Lakes Loons 5

In their first action of the year, the Lansing Lugnuts failed to muster enough of a comeback to catch the Great Lakes Loons, who defeated the Lugs 5-4. 2015 first-round draft pick Jon Harris came out of the gate struggling, walking four batters, giving up two hits and three runs before he was lifted with two outs (both strikeouts) and the bases loaded in the first inning.  Josh DeGraaf stranded those three runners and went on to pitch 2 1/3 innings of hitless ball, striking out one before turning the ball over to Tayler Saucedo who gave up one run on a hit and two walks and two strikeouts in three innings to take the loss. Ryan Cook allowed another run over two innings but also struck out five.

Andrew Guillotte had a pair of hits including a double and three RBI while Lane Thomas (2/3, RBI, 2 BB) and Juan Kelly (2/3, R, BB) each had a pair of hits. Jacob Anderson hit a double and scored while Gunnar Heidt was 1/3 with a double, a walk and two runs.
