The minor league season opened up on Thursday with the squish of rain and snow, much like it did a year ago. The Dunedin Blue Jays were the only team in action as the 2017 season was inaugurated.
Buffalo Bisons, Scranton/Wilkes-Barre Railriders
Game postponed due to inclement weather.
Roster Notes: Taylor Cole, Lucas Harrell, Blake McFarland, Jon Berti and Jose Tabata will all start the year on the DL. The Blue Jays claimed catcher Luke Maile off of waivers from the Rays and assigned him to Buffalo.
New Hampshire Fisher Cats, Binghamton Rumble Ponies
Game postponed due to inclement weather.
Dunedin Blue Jays 1, Clearwater Threshers 3
In the only game on the schedule for the Blue Jays’ four full-season minor league teams, the Dunedin Blue Jays’ offense couldn’t get much of anything off of the Clearwater Threshers’ pitching staff in a 3-1 loss in the opening game of their 2017 schedule. The Threshers sent rehabbing righty Zach Eflin, who is returning from offseason surgery on both of his knees, to the mound and he had no trouble with the Blue Jays lineup, giving up just one hit and no walks over five innings, striking out six. Danny Jansen had all three of the Blue Jays’ hits, going 3/4 on Opening Day while D.J Davis scored the club’s only run, going 0/2 with a walk.
Ryan Borucki was the Opening Day starter for the Blue Jays and he was probably good enough to win over five innings, allowing three runs (two earned) on three hits and a walk with four strikeouts. He was succeeded by Conor Fisk who threw a perfect sixth, striking out two and Justin Shafer who gave up just two hits over two innings, striking out two.
Player of the Game: Danny Jansen
Roster Notes: Lourdes Gurriel, John La Prise, Mitch Nay and Jon Wandling were placed on the 7-day DL to open the season.
Lansing Lugnuts, Great Lakes Loons
Game postponed due to inclement weather.
Roster Notes: Travis Bergen, Nick Hartman, Kyle Weatherly, Javier Hernandez, Carl Wise and Joshua Palacios will all start the year on the Lugnuts’ DL. Geno Encina has been added to the Lugnuts’ roster.
