Buffalo Bisons 2, Lehigh Valley IronPigs 1

The Bisons came out on top of the Lehigh Valley IronPigs in a pitching duel that lived up to its hype. With a former #1 overall pick, Mark Appel, on the mound for Lehigh Valley, Drew Hutchison went out and outdueled him, throwing six innings, allowing one run on six hits and two walks with six strikeouts. Chad Jenkins threw two scoreless innings to pick up the win, walking two and giving up a hit with one strikeout and Chad Girodo picked up his first save of the season with a scoreless inning of relief, giving up a hit and striking out one.

The offense didn’t do much against Appel, scoring just one run in the sixth, but got to the IronPigs’ bullpen with a run in the ninth to win. Jesus Montero had another two hits, going 2/4 while A.J. Jimenez, David Adams and Jon Berti each hit a double. Berti had a walk and Jimenez walked twice, stealing a base (and throwing out the only runner who tried to steal) but also made an error.

Player of the Game: Drew Hutchison

Roster Notes: Drew Hutchison was activated and Bobby Korecky was placed on the 7-day DL retroactive to April 27.

New Hampshire Fisher Cats 1, Binghamton Mets 4

Rowdy Tellez provided just about all of New Hampshire’s offense in a 4-1 loss to the Binghamton Mets on Friday. Tellez was 1/3 with his third home run of the season while the Fisher Cats had just one other hit, a single by K.C. Hobson.

On the mound, Jason Berken allowed all four Mets’ runs on seven hits in six innings, walking three and striking out one. Murphy Smith allowed two hits and a walk in two innings, striking out four while Wil Browning threw a perfect inning in the ninth.

Dunedin Blue Jays 1, Daytona Tortugas 7

Tom Robson continues to struggle with his control and the Dunedin offense sputtered in a 7-1 loss to the Daytona Tortugas. Robson lasted 4 2/3 innings this time, allowing four runs (but only two were earned) on five hits and four walks with one home run allowed while striking out four. While the numbers are not good (45 strikes among 87 pitches), there are some things working in his favour in this one. Brad Allen followed with three runs against in 2 1/3 innings, despite stranding the two runners he inherited from Robson. Allen only allowed one hit and two walks but the hit was a three-run home run. Chris Rowley gave up a hit but got through the eighth unscathed, striking out one.

Jonathan Davis continues to be hot, going 2/3 with a single, a double and a walk for the D-Jays. Ryan McBroom hit his third home run for the club while also taking a walk and Jason Leblebijian hit a double. Michael Bourn was 1/5.

Player of the Game: Jonathan Davis and Ryan McBroom

Roster Notes: Juliandry Higuera was brought back to the D-Jays from extended spring training while L.B. Dantzler was activated off the DL. Emilio Guerrero went on the DL retroactive to April 27.

Lansing Lugnuts 0, Wisconsin Timber Rattlers 2

Three hits and two errors tell the story of the Lansing Lugnuts in their shutout loss to the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers. The hitters struck out 12 times on the night, getting just three hits against Wisconsin pitching with two of them (including a triple) coming from Juan Kelly who also walked.

Ryan Cook scattered 10 hits in his five innings of work but only allowed two runs to score, striking out four. Josh DeGraaf continued his strong work out of the ‘pen, throwing two perfect innings, striking out three and Dusty Isaacs gave up a hit in his inning.

Player of the Game: Juan Kelly
