Two Blue Jays Get Minor League Player of the Month Honours

Bowen Field in Bluefield, West Virginia

On Monday, MiLB.com came out with their players of the month for each of the 16 affiliated minor leagues and the Blue Jays managed to grab Player of the Month honours in two: Ryan Noda was named July’s Player of the Month for the Appalachian League and Dominic Abbadessa got the honour for the Gulf Coast League.

Noda, 21, was a 2017 selection of the Blue Jays, coming out of the University of Cincinnati in the 15th round and has dominated the Appy League. While he hit .444 in July, he’s currently hitting .416/.553/.657 with an insane 40 walks and 35 strikeouts while also stealing six bases and hitting 12 doubles, three triples and five home runs. He’s not getting much to hit, having four multi-walk games in the past 10. August will be an interesting month for Noda, mostly because the first baseman and outfielder will need to adjust to not seeing as many good pitches to hit. His batting average has fallen significantly (he’s hitting .292 in his last 10 games) and while he continues to get on base a ton, the fact that teams are pitching around him means that he’s going to have to figure out a way to help his club.

Noda’s incredible July is well deserved of his Player of the Month award.

Also receiving an award from MiLB is Dom Abbadessa. The 23rd-round pick of the Blue Jays in 2016, Abbadessa returned to the GCL after playing in 14 games there last year. While he hit just .192/.250/.192 last year, he’s taken his game to a new level in 2017.

The outfielder hit .417 with a .457 OBP and a .968 OPS in the month of July, leading the league in hits and was second in runs, OBP and OPS. Overall, Abbadessa is hitting .376/.426/.453 with three doubles and three triples and 10 stolen bases in 16 attempts and is hitting an even .400 over his last 10 games.

Congrats to the two award winners!
