While we’re still waiting for an official announcement, the intrepid beat reporters around the Blue Jays have revealed that the Blue Jays will place MVP third baseman Josh Donaldson on the 10-day DL and will select the contract of the versatile Chris Coghlan.

 

 

Donaldson, 31, has been hobbled so far this year with a recurring calf injury and pulled up lame in Thursday’s game, aggravating the injury. He’s been one of the Blue Jays’ lone lights in their offense, hitting .310/.429/.586 with two doubles and two home runs in nine games but has played DH for the past two games, forcing Kendrys Morales to first base.

Eagle-eyed Shi Davidi posted the Blue Jays’ lineup card for tonight’s game on Twitter, highlighting the fact that Chris Coghlan was listed on the card as a sub. Coghlan was signed by the Blue Jays on a minor league deal before the season started and had a great start to his season with the Buffalo Bisons getting five hits in his first four games with the Bisons but has been hitless in the three games since.

The NL Rookie of the Year in 2009 with the Florida Marlins, Coghlan has always been a gap hitter, hitting 31 doubles in his rookie campaign while hitting .321/.390/.461 with nine home runs and six triples. He had a solid sophomore season in 2010 but began to struggle at the major league level in subsequent years.

Granted free agency after the 2013 season, he signed as a free agent with the Chicago Cubs and had two of his best years with the Cubbies. In 2014, he hit .283/.352/.452 with 28 doubles and nine home runs while he hit .250/.341/.443 with 25 doubles and 16 home runs in 2015. That offseason, The Cubs sent Coghlan to Oakland where he struggled, posting a .487 OPS in 51 games and was traded back to the Cubs where he returned to the form he had been playing at in the previous two campaigns at Wrigley, bringing his OPS up to .779 in 48 games as a Cub.

Coghlan was granted free agency again after the 2016 season and signed as a free agent with the Philadelphia Phillies in February only to be released on March 28 and he was subsequently signed by the Blue Jays on April 1 on a minor league deal.

 

UPDATE: The Blue Jays have designated catcher Juan Graterol for assignment. Graterol has been splitting playing time in Buffalo with Mike Ohlman and Luke Maile while Alex Monsalve was on the DL (and has been activated to replace Graterol).
