Toronto Blue Jays’ 11th to 15th Round Selections in the 2017 MLB Draft

Here we look at who the Blue Jays selected in the 11th through 15th round of the 2017 MLB Draft.

Eleventh Round

In the 11th round, with the 339th pick in the draft, the Blue Jays selected right-handed pitcher Donnie Sellers out of Wake Forest University. Sellers was originally an outfielder when he was recruited to Wake Forest but after a wrist injury, he moved into the bullpen as a freshman. While his numbers weren’t spectacular over his first two years of pitching (he walked a ton of batters and didn’t strike out many), he transitioned into the weekend rotation as a junior where he logged 78 2/3 innings this spring with a 4.81 ERA and 1.36 WHIP, lowering his walk rate a ton and improving his strikeout rate. Baseball America has seen his fastball as high as 96 mph with running movement but sits around 90-92 as a starter. He added a changeup and his slider has shown good potential.

Twelfth Round

For their 12th-round pick, the Jays selected Texan righty Matt Shannon out of Angelo State University who stands at 6-foot-3 and 220 pounds. This spring Shannon had a solid season on the mound, posting a 3.22 ERA while walking 35 and striking out 93 in 100 2/3 innings.

Thirteenth Round

With the 399th pick in the draft, the Blue Jays went for another pitcher, taking lefty Brody Rodning, a junior, out of Minnesota State, Mankato. Baseball America commented on Rodning’s athleticism as a three-sport star in high school. His fastball sits around 89-91 mph and can touch 93 and has a slider and a curve with a changeup but none of those pitches were getting top marks.

Fourteenth Round

The Blue Jays went with a first baseman, P.K. (Patrick) Morris, out of Steinbrenner High School in Florida with their 14th round pick. A powerhitting lefty-handed hitter, I can see him going to college although I wasn’t able to find out where he’s committed.

Fifteenth Round

The Blue Jays went with a college outfielder, Ryan Noda out of Cincinnati with their 15th-round pick, 459th overall. Noda is a left-handed hitting junior who had his best season in 2017, hitting .236/.388/.478 with 12 doubles, two triples and nine home runs. Still, he struck out 68 times in 178 at bats but had a good eye, walking 33 times.
