May 5, 2017 Toronto Blue Jays Minor League Report

Justin Maese

Three games were washed off the schedule as rains in the northeast continue to plague baseball fans. Still, the Dunedin Blue Jays and Lansing Lugnuts played with the Lugnuts taking a victory and the D-Jays taking a loss.

Buffalo Bisons, Lehigh Valley Iron Pigs

Game postponed due to rain.

Roster Notes: The Blue Jays claimed Cesar Valdez off waivers and optioned him to the Buffalo Bisons.

New Hampshire Fisher Cats, Binghamton Rumble Ponies

Double header postponed due to inclement weather.

Roster Notes: Blake McFarland was placed on the 7-day DL while Josh DeGraaf was promoted to Double-A from Dunedin.

Dunedin Blue Jays 0, Bradenton Marauders 4

The Dunedin Blue Jays’ offense went MIA, getting just two hits and two walks in a 4-0 loss to the Bradenton Marauders. Matt Dean and Lane Thomas each had a hit with Thomas adding an assist from the outfield.

Angel Perdomo had a rough game on the mound, allowing three runs (two earned) on four hits (including a home run) and four walks while striking out six. The Marauders were very aggressive on the bases with leadoff hitter Cole Tucker stealing four bases with three of them off Perdomo but anyone not named Tucker was caught with Perdomo getting two pickoffs. Jared Carkuff was activated from extended spring training and threw three scoreless innings, allowing two hits and two walks with two strikeouts and Connor Eller finished the game, allowing an unearned run on a hit and a walk.

Player of the Game: None

Roster Notes: Jared Carkuff was assigned to the D-Jays from extended spring training and Josh DeGraaf was promoted to New Hampshire.

Lansing Lugnuts 5, Burlington Bees 2

Justin Maese took the ball and ran with it for the Lansing Lugnuts (15-11) as they defeated the Burlington Bees by a 5-2 score. Maese tossed 94 pitches for the Lugnuts, going seven innings and gave up two runs (one earned) on just three hits and four walks while striking out five. He had an excellent 10 ground out to three fly out ratio but he flagged in the later innings, walking all four batters in the fifth inning or later. Maese yielded to Daniel Lietz in the eighth and Jackson McClelland in the ninth, who notched his sixth save of the season.

With stiff winds blowing in, no one hit a home run but Bo Bichette had starter Joe Gatto’s number early, going the other way for a triple in the first inning and a double in the third, finishing the game at 2/4. Christian Williams was also 2/4, hitting a first-pitch double and getting a single (and two-base error which had him make it to third base) with an RBI. J.B. Woodman drove in two with an opposite field double.

Player of the Game: Justin Maese
