May 30, 2017 Toronto Blue Jays Minor League Report

Dalton Pompey

While four games were on the schedule, only three were played and the Blue Jays’ minor leaguers went 1-2 while a Lansing Lugnut picked up an award for his play last week.

Buffalo Bisons 6, Toledo Mud Hens 4

Roemon Fields

The Buffalo Bisons got down to the Toledo Mud Hens early but rallied to eventually beat them 6-4 on Tuesday. Roemon Fields brought his batting average up to .398 with a 2/4 game that included a walk, a stolen base, two RBI and a run. Christian Lopes also had two hits and a walk, scoring a run. Mike Ohlman drove in two, going 1/4 with a double.

Cesar Valdez started for the Bisons, giving up four runs on six hits and a walk with four strikeouts in 4 1/3 innings. Jeff Beliveau got the win, tossing 2 2/3 innings of hitless ball, walking one and striking out three while Chad Girodo allowed just a hit in his inning and Leonel Campos got the save with a one-walk ninth.

Player of the Game: Jeff Beliveau and Roemon Fields

Roster Notes: Mat Latos was granted his release by the Bisons and Dominic Leone was optioned down to Buffalo by the Blue Jays.

New Hampshire Fisher Cats, Harrisburg Senators

Game Postponed due to rain.

Dunedin Blue Jays 6, Jupiter Hammerheads 9

Jordan Romano had a strong start for the Dunedin Blue Jays but the relief corps and the defense let him down, resulting in a 9-6 loss at the hands of the Jupiter Hammerheads. Romano went five strong innings, giving up two runs (one earned) on five hits and two walks with five strikeouts but Connor Eller came in and was ultimately charged with four runs (three earned) over 1 1/3 innings, giving up four hits (including a home run) and two walks. Tom Robson relieved Eller and allowed his inherited runner to score, giving up three more runs, all unearned, on two hits and a walk over one inning. Philip Walby finished the eighth, stranding a runner and walking one while Adonys Cardona had a strong ninth, walking one and striking out one.

The big news for Blue Jays fans in this game was that Dalton Pompey began his rehab assignment with Dunedin following his lengthy DL stint for a concussion incurred in spring training. Pompey didn’t seem to show any signs of the injury as he played the whole game, going 3/4 with a double, a walk, a stolen base, three RBI and an outfield assist from center field. Max Pentecost was also 3/4, hitting a single, a triple and a home run, scoring twice. Carl Wise was 2/4 with a run, as was D.J. Davis. Juan Kelly was 1/4 with a walk and an RBI.

Player of the Game: Dalton Pompey and Max Pentecost

Roster Notes: Dalton Pompey was assigned to Dunedin on a rehab assignment.

Lansing Lugnuts 4, Lake County Captains 9

Bo Bichette

The Lansing Lugnuts opened their series with the Lake County Captains with a 9-4 loss, thanks primarily to a six-run fifth inning for the Captains. The ball was flying out as the teams combined for six home runs but it was the Captains who hit four. Denis Diaz started for Lansing, walking six batters over just four innings and giving up four runs on four hits (including a home run). Geno Encina was called upon to staunch the bleeding but gave up another three home runs among seven hits to tally five runs over three innings despite striking out six batters. Kirby Snead finished the game, giving up a hit and a walk but no runs in the eighth inning.

Bo Bichette responded well to the word that he had been named the Midwest League Player of the Week, and took his league-leading batting average into the game. He was 1/3 with a home run and two walks. J.B. Woodman also hit a home run, his fourth of the season, driving in two runs but also striking out three times. Christian Williams was 2/3 with an RBI and a run.

Player of the Game: Bo Bichette
