Organizationally, it wasn’t the best day for the Blue Jays minor league clubs, playing nine games and losing seven of them despite a no hitter in Lansing and a four-hit game for one of the club’s top young players.

Also coming back from the All-Star break were the New Hampshire Fisher Cats who were in the lead before a lightning strike shut down the game with a runner on in the ninth inning. The runner scored after the resumption but the Fisher Cats scored two in the top of the 10th and held on for the win. Christian Lopes started the 10th inning rally with a single, his second hit of the night and scored on an error by the Sea Dogs on a sac bunt by Roemon Fields. With Fields at third, Jason Leblebijian tallied his second RBI of the game with a sacrifice fly. Rowdy Tellez continues to swing a hot bat, going 2/5 with a double, a stolen base and an RBI while Lopes was 2/5 with a double and two runs. Jason Leblebijian went deep with his fourth home run with the Fisher Cats in the first inning and bookended the scoring with his sac fly in the 10th.

Taylor Cole had a strong start for the Fisher Cats, throwing five innings and giving up just a run on a solo home run among five hits with one walk and four strikeouts. Brady Dragmire allowed two runs on a home run, walking two and giving up just the one hit in an inning. Tim Mayza only lasted 1/3 of an inning, striking out one, walking one and giving up a hit. Wil Browning picked him up by finishing the inning and throwing one more complete frame with one strikeout. On to start the ninth, Chris Smith got into trouble, walking the only batter he faced before lightning struck and delayed the game. When play resumed John Anderson took the mound and gave up a hit and a walk, allowing Smith’s runner to score despite striking out two in the inning. Anderson stayed in the game, earning the win after throwing a solid 10th, striking out two more after allowing the first two batters to reach base with a single and a walk.

Dunedin Blue Jays 7, Bradenton Marauders 10

Dan Jansen
Danny Jansen

Despite having a 7-6 lead after five innings, the Bradenton Marauders struck for four runs in the eighth and ninth to come back and defeat the Dunedin Blue Jays 10-7. Sean Reid-Foley was on the mound for the Jays and had his worst start of his time in Dunedin this year, allowing six runs on eight hits with six strikeouts over 5 2/3 innings. The bright side was that Reid-Foley did not walk anyone. Jose Fernandez was tagged with the loss, giving up three runs on a hit and two walks with one strikeouts in 1 2/3 innings. Carlos Ramirez allowed a run on two hits and two walks in his inning and Starlyn Suriel finished the game, making his first Dunedin appearance this year, walking two and striking out one in 2/3 of an inning.

Ryan McBroom continues his hot streak, going 2/5 with two doubles and two RBI with a run while Danny Jansen seems to have found his batting stroke since returning from the DL, going 3/4 with a double and an RBI. Anthony Alford also had two hits and a walk, driving in a run, stealing a base and scoring twice. Gunnar Heidt was also on base three times, going 1/2 with two walks, two runs and a stolen base.

Lansing Lugnuts 0, Peoria Chiefs 1

Jordan Romano

The Lansing Lugnuts achieved something historic in the second half of the double header with the Peoria Chiefs: they pitched a no-hitter and lost. In the bottom of the sixth inning, a fielding error by reliever Josh DeGraaf allowed Craig Aikin, who had walked, to reach second on a sacrifice bunt. The runner later scored on a sacrifice fly after moving to third on a ground out. Thus, despite not allowing a hit all game, the Lansing Lugnuts lost 1-0. Jordan Romano got the start, throwing five no-hit innings, walking two, striking out five and was charged with the unearned run. DeGraaf went the sixth inning without giving up a hit or walk.

The Lugnuts got just three hits as a team, with one each from John La Prise, Ryan Hissey and Austin Davis.

Player of the Game: Jordan Romano

Vancouver Canadians 1, Boise Hawks 7

The visiting Vancouver Canadians lost the second game of their series with the Boise Hawks 7-1, getting little offense in the process. The club only had six hits overall including a solo home run from Jacob Anderson in the ninth inning and a double from D.J. McKnight.

Geno Encina allowed a run and left with two runners on after 2/3 of an inning. Both runners scored after Nate Abel gave up a hit. Grayson Huffman allowed another run on three hits in his inning and Matthew Smoral had a rough outing, allowing a run on two walks, two wild pitches and a hit batter but struck out three.

Player of the Game: Jacob Anderson

Bluefield Blue Jays 6, Princeton Rays 10

The Bluefield Blue Jays were also involved in their own bullpen collapse, giving up a whopping eight runs in the eighth and ninth to lose 10-6 to the Princeton Rays. The bullpen wasted a strong start from Jose Nova who went five scoreless innings, giving up just four hits and two walks with five strikeouts. Yennsy Diaz allowed five runs in three innings, surrendering six hits and walking three while striking out three. Christian Cox came in for the ninth inning but couldn’t retire any batters, hitting one and giving up two hits, leaving the bases loaded for Chris Hall who allowed all three to score while letting two more runs of his own to come in, blowing the save.

The bullpen also wasted some impressive work from the offense. Vladimir Guerrero, Jr. was 4/5 with two doubles and a home run, driving in three and scoring twice. Nick Sinay was on base five times with a full house of three singles and two walks, adding a stolen base and three runs. Earl Burl was 3/3 with a walk and was caught stealing twice, while also committing an error in center field. Matt Morgan was 2/4 with a double and a home run.

DSL Blue Jays 4, DSL Orioles1 6

DSL Blue Jays were off to a solid start, getting four runs in the first four innings but that only amounted to a 4-3 lead before the DSL Orioles1 club kept scoring, adding runs in the fifth, sixth and ninth, finishing with a 6-4 win. Ruben Ventura started and gave up three runs (two earned) on four hits and two walks with three strikeouts in 3 2/3 innings.
