Despite three losses by the three highest-level minor league teams, the Blue Jays’ organization still has something to be excited about in Lansing as the Lugnuts’ offense continues to lead the Midwest League and they hold a one-game lead in the Eastern Division.
Buffalo Bisons 2, Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders 7
The Buffalo Bisons’ bats continued to slump as they managed only six hits in a 7-2 loss to the Yankees’ top farm club. Matt Hague, the Bisons’ best hitter all season long, pushed his batting average to .341 with two singles and had both of the club’s RBI.
Felix Doubront was roughed up over his four innings, allowing five runs on seven hits and a walk with three strikeouts. Austin Bibens-Dirks provided three innings of solid relief, allowing just one run on two hits and no walks with four strikeouts. Greg Infante walked three in an inning of work, allowing another run and Bobby Korecky finished the game with a scoreless ninth.
Roster Notes: Scott Copeland was promoted (and sent back down after his spot start in Toronto). Munenori Kawasaki was sent down to Buffalo and Austin Bibens-Dirkx was activated from the DL. Andrew Albers has been sent to Buffalo outright (to remove him from the 40-man roster).
Player of the Game: Matt Hague
New Hampshire Fisher Cats 1, Akron RubberDucks 8
A day after getting beating by the Fisher Cats by a 9-1 score, the RubberDucks turned the tables, winning 8-1 on Wednesday. Starter Casey Lawrence continued his string of rough outings, getting dinged for six runs (five earned) on eight hits and two walks in six innings. Dustin Antolin surrendered two more runs in an inning and Luis Perez finished the game with a two-strikeout inning.
Dalton Pompey went 2/4 with a triple (but also a throwing error) and K.C. Hobson continued to swing a hot bat, going 2/4. Jacky Murphy was 1/3 with a walk and Shane Opitz was 1/3 with a triple and the club’s only RBI.
Roster Notes: Wil Browning was sent down to Dunedin and lefty Chad Girodo was promoted to New Hampshire.
Player of the Game: Dalton Pompey and Shane Opitz
Dunedin Blue Jays 6, Charlotte Stone Crabs 12
The Dunedin Blue Jays surrendered over 10 runs in a game for the second consecutive day as they took a 12-6 loss to Charlotte. Starter Jeremy Gabryszwski took the brunt of the barrage, absorbing six runs on 11 hits over the first six innings of the game. Carlos Ramirez didn’t escape harm, allowing two runs (one earned) over his inning while Alberto Tirado allowed a three-run home run as part of a four-run (three earned) outing. Boomer Collins made his professional pitching debut, retiring the only batter he faced on a groundout.
L.B. Dantzler pushed his average to .292 with a 3/4 game that included a double and two RBI while Martin Medina was 3/4 with a double and two RBI. Collins had himself a day at the plate too, going 2/4 with a double, an RBI and two runs scored. Ian Parmley also had a two-hit day, going 2/5 with two runs and a stolen base.
Roster Notes: Chad Girodo was promoted to New Hampshire and Wil Browning was sent down to Dunedin.
Player of the Game: L.B. Dantzler, Martin Medina and Boomer Collins
Lansing Lugnuts 12, Quad Cities River Bandits 5
Starlyn Suriel had a solid game, making his first start in a while but the day belonged to the batters in a 12-5 win. With 12 hits, the Lugnuts’ offensive machine continued to roll, getting multi-hit days from five players. Anthony Alford was 2/4 with a walk, three runs scored, two RBI and his first home run of the year. Richard Urena also hit his team-leading ninth home run of the season, going 1/5. Rowdy Tellez drove in three to take over the team lead in RBI (44), going 2/4 with a double, a walk and two runs scored. Ryan McBroom pushed his batting average to .317 with a 2/5 game that included a double and an RBI while Mike Reeves was 2/5 with two RBI and Tim Locastro was 2/3 with a double, a hit by pitch and three runs scored and is now hitting .324 on the season.
Suriel logged five innings for the win, allowing two runs on two hits and two walks with two strikeouts. Chase Mallard allowed another two runs in three innings on three hits, three walks with three strikeouts and Mark Biggs allowed a run on a hit and two walks.
Player of the Game: Anthony Alford, Rowdy Tellez and Tim Locastro
DSL Blue Jays 11, DSL Orioles1 3
The DSL Blue Jays beat up on their counterparts from the Orioles’ organization again, scoring 11 times on 14 hits and 10 walks. Five players had at least two hits and Jesus Severino complemented his 2/4 day with another two walks. Victor Figuero had two singles, two RBI, two runs and a walk while Norberto Obeso was 2/5 with a triple, three RBI and a walk. Manuel Herazo was 2/4 with two runs and an RBI while Antonio Concepcion was 2/4 with two runs, a walk and an RBI. Sam Buelens was 1/2 with a run, getting his first professional hit.
On the mound, Yonardo Herdenez struck out six and didn’t walk anyone in five innings, allowing two runs (one earned). Ruben Ventura struck out three in two innings of one-hit ball and Jose Agrinzones threw an inning. Manuel Dominguez didn’t give up a hit but he walked three (and struck out three) in his inning of work, allowing a run.
