There were only three wins in the Blue Jays’ system on Thursday but Taylor Cole came up with another great pitching performance for the Fisher Cats.
Buffalo Bisons 3, Rochester Red Wings 4
The Buffalo Bisons lost their second straight one-run game to the Rochester Red Wings on Thursday. While no aspect of the game was particularly bad for the Bisons, nothing was good enough to come away with the win. Scott Copeland got the start and went 6 1/3 innings for the loss, allowing four runs on seven hits (including a two-run home run) with three walks and a strikeout. Rob Rasmussen finished the seventh, stranding an inherited runner from Copeland while Chad Jenkins pitched a clean eighth. The Bisons only had eight hits with two-hit games from Alex Hassan (2/4) and Munenori Kawasaki (2/3, BB, R). Jonathan Diaz hit a two-run home run (his second of the year) and took a walk.

New Hampshire Fisher Cats 2, Trenton Thunder 1
While three runs weren’t enough for the Bisons to come away with a win, Taylor Cole made sure that two runs would do the job for the New Hampshire Fisher Cats. Cole was stellar, going eight innings and giving up just one run on five hits and two walks with five strikeouts on the night. Wil Browning followed with his third save, going a scoreless inning, giving up a hit and striking out two. The offense didn’t do much, getting only five hits but Jon Berti made his two hits count, picking up two RBI with two outs in the fifth which held up for a win. Dalton Pompey was 1/4 with a stolen base and Jorge Flores had the other hit, going 1/3 with a run.

Dunedin Blue Jays 1, Daytona Tortugas 5
The Dunedin Blue Jays’ bats couldn’t find the groove as they only scored one unearned run off Sal Romano in a 5-1 loss to the Daytona Tortugas. Conner Greene was very solid, giving up just one run to the Tortugas over five innings of work, giving up five hits and three walks with three strikeouts. Jackson Lowery gave up the other four runs (four earned) on two hits and three walks and Brady Dragmire finished off the game, stranding two runners and didn’t give up a hit, allowing only one walk in 2 2/3 innings with four strikeouts.
Despite eight hits, the offense couldn’t manufacture a run without the help of three Daytona errors. Matt Dean was 2/4, Mitch Nay was 2/4 with a double and Jonathan Davis and Anthony Alford each were 1/4 with a double.
Roster Notes: J.D. Davis was activated off the DL along with Matt Smoral while John Kravetz was assigned to the GCL Blue Jays.
Player of the Game: Brady Dragmire, Matt Dean, Mitch Nay
Lansing Lugnuts 6, Great Lakes Loons 5
The Lansing Lugnuts got more than their fair share of baseball on Thursday as they went 15 innings against the Great Lakes Loons, getting a game-winning home run by Juan Kelly in the 15th inning. For Kelly, the home run marked his first hit for the Lugnuts after getting promoted and it capped a day that saw him start 0/6 with three strikeouts. Chris Carlson was 3/5 with an RBI and three walks while D.J. Davis was 3/6 with an RBI, a walk and two stolen bases. Alex Maldonado had a pair of hits (including a double) and an RBI in the number nine spot in the batting order.
Jesus Tinoco had a strong start, going six innings and allowing tw oruns on six hits and a walk with six strikeouts. Phil Kish relieved him and gave up three runs in the seventh inning before Tim Mayza contributed four outstanding innings of relief, giving up three hits and a walk with five strikeouts. Jose Fernandez followed with three shutout innings, giving up just one hit and striking out one while Mark Biggs picked up the save despite allowing two hits in the 15th inning.

Vancouver Canadians 4, Eugene Emeralds 8
Canadian Sean Ratcliffe got the start for the Canadians but allowed five runs in 2 1/3 innings, taking the loss. Daniel Young was solid in two innings of relief, allowing two hits and two walks and Joey Aquino gave up three more runs in two innings. Joe Claver went 2/3 of an inning and Bob Wheatley surrendered the final run in an inning. Andrew Case finished the game with a scoreless ninth.
On the offensive side, Lane Thomas was 2/4 with a double while Justin Atkinson had two hits. J.C. Cardenas, hitting only .119 on the season, hit his first professional home run, going deep in the seventh inning with Atkinson and Gunnar Heidt aboard.
Roster Notes: Andrew Guillotte was assigned to the Vancouver Canadians along with Stuart Holmes, Josh De Graaf, and Ryan Borucki.
Player of the Game: J.C. Cardenas
Bluefield Blue Jays 6, Danville Braves 7
The Danville Braves and the Bluefield Blue Jays did most of their scoring early, playing a 6-6 tie game until the bottom of the ninth inning. Jake Brentz allowed five of the Braves’ runs, getting hit for five runs on seven hits and two walks in 2 1/3 innings. Geno Encina had a strong outing, stranding Brentz’s inherited runner and giving up just one of his own in 4 2/3 innings, allowing three hits and one walk with four strikeouts. Alberto Guzman surrendered a run on a solo home run on two hits.
Three of the runs came off the bat of Gabe Clark who went deep in the third inning, driving in three and going 1/4 while Christian Williams had three RBI off of two hits (a single and a double). Deiferson Barreto was on base three times and scored twice with a single and two walks.
Roster Notes: Andrew Guillotte, Josh DeGraaf and Stuart Homes were promoted to Vancouver.
Player of the Game: Geno Encina and Christian Williams
GCL Blue Jays 4, GCL Pirates 3
It only took nine innings for the GCL Blue Jays to come up with a 4-3 win over the GCL Pirates on Thursday. Reggie Pruitt added another two hits for the Blue Jays, scoring twice while Jake Thomas was 2/4 with a triple and an RBI. Edward Olivares was 1/2 with two stolen bases and Nash Knight was 1/4 with an RBI and a walk.
Luis Sanchez started and went 6 2/3 innings with three runs allowed (two earned) on five hits and two walks with seven strikeouts. John Kravetz finished the game, going 2 1/3 innings of one-hit, one-walk ball.
Roster Notes: Ryan Borucki was sent back to the Vancouver Canadians and John Kravetz came back to the GCL from the Dunedin Blue Jays.
Player of the Game: Luis Sanchez and Reggie Pruitt
DSL Blue Jays 5, DSL D-backs 6
The DSL Blue Jays lost a close one, getting a strong start from Wilfri Aleton, who went five innings with just three hits and one run allowed, striking out five. Juan Nunez blew the save, giving up three runs on four hits in 1 2/3 innings while Wilmin Lara took the loss, giving up two unearned runs in one inning of work. Guillermo De La Cruz finished the game with 1 1/3 innings of scoreless ball after stranding two of Lara’s runners.
The offense had seven hits and seven walks including two singles from Kevin Vicuna. Norberto Obeso was 1/3 with two walks while Francisco Rodriguez was 1/2 with two walks. Sterling Guzman walked twice and Antonio Concepcion was 1/2 with a solo home run.
