July 9, 2017 Toronto Blue Jays Minor League Report

The Toronto Blue Jays’ minor league clubs went into the All-Star break with a 1-5 day, only getting a win from the Dunedin Blue Jays.

 

Buffalo Bisons 1, Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders 2

 

Ian Parmley

The Buffalo Bisons went into the All-Star Break with a whimper, falling 2-1 to the Pawtucket Red Sox despite putting up a fight and taking the game to 11 innings. Ian Parmley had two hits, going 2/4 with the club’s only RBI while Gregorio Petit, Mike Ohlman and Jon Berti each hit a double.

Brett Oberholtzer had a solid start, going six innings and giving up just one run on four hits and a walk with two strikeouts. Tim Mayza provided two scoreless innings despite allowing four hits while Murphy Smith contributed two scoreless frames, allowing three hits. Chris Smith took the loss, giving up two hits and a walk in the bottom of the 11th to give the Red Sox a walkoff.

Roster notes: Griffin Glaude was sent back to Lansing from Buffalo while Otto Lopez and David Jacob were assigned to the Buffalo roster.

 

 

New Hampshire Fisher Cats 0, Portland Sea Dogs 9

 

The New Hampshire Fisher Cats lost their fourth consecutive game heading into the All-Star Break (hosted this year at home at Northeast Delta Dental Stadium) with a 9-0 loss to the powerhouse Trenton Thunder. The Fisher Cats had just five hits including two from Alex Monsalve.

Sean Reid-Foley gave up six runs (five earned) on seven hits and two walks in 4 1/3 innings before Carlos Ramirez came on to dominate, striking out four of the six batters he faced, giving up just one hit in 1 2/3 innings. Jose Fernandez gave up another three runs in the seventh and Justin Shafer tossed a clean eighth.

Player of the Game: None

 

Dunedin Blue Jays 2, Clearwater Threshers 1

 

The Dunedin Blue Jays rallied in the bottom of the ninth to get back to .500, beating the Clearwater Threshers 2-1. Mike Reeves led off the bottom of the ninth with a single and was replaced with Michael De La Cruz on the bases. After being sacrificed over to second and then again to third, De La Cruz scored on a fielding error to win the game. Max Pentecost was 2/5 in the win, hitting a double while Mike Reeves provided some fireworks with a solo home run in the fourth, a walk and the leadoff single in the ninth. Jake Thomas was also 2/3.

Josh DeGraaf had an outstanding start, going seven innings and allowing one run on five hits and one walk with six strikeouts but unfortunately, did not figure into the decision. Philip Walby held the Threshers at bay in the eighth and Jackson McClelland picked up his first Dunedin win with a scoreless ninth.

Roster Notes: Daniel Lietz was promoted from Lansing to Dunedin.

 

Lansing Lugnuts 4, Fort Wayne TinCaps 5

 

Mitch Nay

The Lansing Lugnuts fell 5-4 to the Fort Wayne TinCaps, wasting a strong start from Osman Gutierrez and a home run from Mitch Nay. Gutierrez gave up just one hit in four innings but got himself into trouble, walking six and striking out six. Griffin Glaude returned to Lansing with two scoreless innings, striking out three and Jared Carkuff got hit hard, allowing four runs on five hits and a walk in 1 2/3 innings. Nick Hartman allowed his inherited runner to score and gave up one of his own before closing out the eighth.

Nay was 2/3 with his fourth home run, a walk and two RBI. Edward Olivares continued his hot streak, going 2/4 with a run.

Roster Notes: Daniel Lietz was promoted to Dunedin and Griffin Glaude was returned to Lansing from the Buffalo Bisons.

 

Vancouver Canadians 2, Boise Hawks 3

 

Norberto Obeso

The Vancouver Canadians lost a tight game to the Boise Hawks, coming within one run in the top of the ninth before the Hawks shut the door on a 3-2 win. Kacy Clemens was 2/4 with a double and Riley Adams drove in a run, also going 2/4. Norberto Obeso was 2/4 with an RBI.

Juan Nunez struggled with his control, walking six in four innings, allowing two runs (one earned) on two hits and striking out two. Miguel Burgos gave up the final run on a solo home run (among two hits) as he pitched two innings. Jake Fishman struck out three over the final two frames of the game.

Player of the Game: Kacy Clemens, Riley Adams and Norberto Obeso

 

Bluefield Blue Jays 4, Princeton Rays 6

 

The Bluefield Blue Jays lost 6-4 to the Princeton Rays on Sunday despite scoring a pair in the bottom of the ninth to get close. Fourth-round pick Kevin Smith was 3/4 with a home run, a walk and two runs while Antony Fuentes was 2/5 with a double and two RBI. Ryan Noda pushed his battig average to .508 with two hits in three at bats, adding two walks.

Jordan Barrett allowed three runs (two earned) on three hits and a walk over 2 2/3 innings, striking out two before Tyler Olander finished off the third inning. Turner Larkins struck out three in two innings, giving up a run on four hits while Joel Espinal allowed two runs on four hits with three strikeouts in the final four innings.
