July 8 Minor League Report/July 9 Preview

The Blue Jays snapped their losing streak thanks mainly to a great performance by R.A. Dickey in which he threw seven scoreless innings with just one walk and five strikeouts.

Buffalo Bisons 2, Rochester Red Wings 3

There were only 12 hits overall in this brisk, efficient game between Buffalo and Rochester. Esmil Rogers was very good, giving up three runs on six hits and two walks in 7 2/3 innings while striking out four. A.J. Jimenez had two hits, as did Ryan Goins who drove in the team’s two runs with a double.

Player of the Game: Ryan Goins and Esmil Rogers

New Hampshire Fisher Cats 2, New Britain Rock Cats 10

In the completion of Monday’s rain-suspended game, the Fisher Cats took the loss with the bullpen failing to hold the line after John Anderson had allowed two runs in two innings (but striking out four and walking none). Scott Gracey was charged with three runs over two innings and Richard Bleier allowed five (four earned) over three innings. The offense was quiet with just five hits including an Andy Burns double (he also walked) and a two-run home run by Kevin Nolan.

New Hampshire Fisher Cats 4, New Britain Rock Cats 5

It was a Daniel Norris start tonight for the night cap, but with many scouts in attendance (reportedly), Norrish failed to impress, lasting just 2/3 of an inning, allowing two runs on three hits and two walks. Club policy is to not let the young pitchers keep throwing if they’re above the 30 or 35 pitch mark in a given inning and that’s what led to the early hook. Tyler Ybarra was solid through three and a third innings but Dustin Antolin (an Eastern League All-Star) allowed another two runs in two innings to get saddled with the loss. Dalton Pompey finally broke out a bit, going 2/4 with a double while Mike McDade went 2/3 with a a two-run home run and K.C. Hobson went deep as well.

Dunedin Blue Jays: Game Postponed Due to Rain

Lansing Lugnuts 12, Lake County Captains 4

The Lugnuts brought their bats with them to Lake County and slugged out 12 runs on 13 hits including home runs from Matt Dean and Derrick Loveless and and two doubles from Dawel Lugo. Dean added a double in his 2/4 game and he scored three times and drove in four. Loveless was 2/5 with a double and a home run, scored twice and drove in a pair. Lugo was 3/4 and drove in four while Mike Reeves (2/3) and David Harris (3/4, RBI) also had multi-hit games. The pitching was solid, getting four strong innings (two hits, one run, two walks, six strikeouts) from Brad Allen and Jimmy Cordero returned to Lansing with a scoreless frame. Roberto Espinosa went two scoreless and Scott Silverstein allowed three runs in his inning of work. Phil Kish finished off the game, not allowing a run in the ninth.

Roster Notes: Jimmy Cordero was activated off the DL and Roberto Osuna was sent to the GCL Blue Jays and activated.

Vancouver Canadians 6, Spokane Indians 5

The Vancouver Canadians managed to hold on to their lead and emerge with a victory after scoring four runs in the fourth and two in the seventh. Tim Locastro (2/4, 2 RBI, BB) hit his first home run of the year, as did outfielder Sean Hurley (1/4, 3 RBI) while Franklin Barreto also had two hits, going 2/3 with a triple, two walks and an RBI. Roemon Fields stole his 20th base of the year. On the mound, Starlyn Suriel got lit up for five runs in 5 1/3 innings (despite striking out five) but the bullpen held on after he came out of the game.

Bluefield Blue Jays 8, Burlington Royals 3

The Blue Jays won another from the Royals and have snuck up close to the .500 mark with a 9-10 record. Francisco Rios allowed three runs on ten hits over five innings but Oscar Cabrera earned the win with three innings of scoreless, one-hit relief. Richard Urena had two hits – a triple and a double – to go with a walk and a stolen base while Rolando Segovia (1/5, 2 RBI) and Trent Miller (1/4, RBI0 each hit a home run. Gabriel Cenas went 1/3 with a walk and scored twice while Dan Jansen was 1/2 with an RBI and two walks.

GCL Blue Jays 10, GCL Phillies 3

The GCL Blue Jays struck early and often as this game was anxiously awaited by many. It marked the second professional appearance of Sean Reid-Foley, the Jays’ second-round pick (2 IP, 1 H, 3 K) and another appearance by the Jays’ third-round pick, Nick Wells (3 IP, 4 H, 2 R, 1 BB, 5 K). The biggest news was the in-game return to the mound by one of the Jays’ top prospects, Roberto Osuna, the 19-year-old right-handed phenom from Mexico. Osuna, on the comeback trail from Tommy John surgery, started the game and threw one inning, striking out two batters. On the hitting side, it was a breakout game for the 2014 11th-overall selection, catcher Max Pentecost who played DH and went 5/5 with two doubles and two RBI. Also having good games were Juan Kelly who was 2/4 with a double, triple and three RBI, Juan Tejada (playing center field) who was 2/4 with a double and a stolen base, Angel Gomez (2/2, RBI, 2 BB), Dean Bell (2/4, RBI) and Lane Thomas (2/4). I would have loved to have been there for this one!

Player of the Game: Max Pentecost

DSL Blue Jays 10, DSL Marlins 7

On the pitching side, Juliandry Higuera went six innings and allowed just two runs (one earned) while Erick Hurtado allowed two unearned in his inning. Pedro Diaz allowed a run in his inning and Jose Diaz conceded two in just 2/3 of an inning. Javier Hernandez had two doubles, going 2/4 while Rodrigo Orozco was 2/6 with a double and three RBI. Eddy Alcantara was 2/4 with a stolen base and a walk for the Blue Jays.
