The Jays took a tough loss last night against the Boston Red Sox 14-1 and the toothless offense they’ve been displaying for a while is rearing its head again.

Buffalo Bisons 11, Lehigh Valley Iron Pigs

Buffalo broke their seven-game losing streak but it wasn’t looking good down the stretch of the game. The Bisons were down 4-3 after the fifth inning but managed to score a run in the ninth thanks to a sac fly from Mike Nickeas and then put an exclamation mark on their comeback by scoring seven runs in the top of the 10th. In that inning, the Bisons loaded the bases and Jonathan Diaz hit an RBI single. He was then followed by Ryan Goins who drove in two with a single and later on Ryan Schimpf and Brad Glenn each drove in another two runs with a single and double respectively. Leading the way with three hits each were A.J. Jimenez and Brett Wallace while Goins, Kevin Pillar, Schimpf and Glenn each had a pair of hits with Schimpf driving in three runs, Glenn and Goins had two RBI. Liam Hendriks got the start and gave up four runs on eight hits (including a home run) but didn’t walk anyone and struck out nine. Steve Delabar threw two excellent innings without giving up a hit and only walking one and striking out four and Chad Jenkins pitched a scoreless 10th.

Player of the Game: Ryan Schimpf and Brad Glenn

New Hampshire Fisher Cats 1, Trenton Thunder 4

In Game 1 of the double header, the Fisher Cats lost the game, mainly because they couldn’t get their offense going. John Anderson made the start, throwing 5 1/3 innings, a season high for him, and allowed four runs (two earned) on seven hits and two walks with four strikeouts. Tyler Ybarra threw 1 2/3 innings and gave up just two hits with two strikeouts. The Fisher Cats only had four hits with a double by Jon Berti the only extra-base hit.

New Hampshire Fisher Cats 5, Trenton Thunder 8

In Game 2, Richard Bleier was victimized by the long ball, allowing two over his three innings and allowing five runs (four earned). The first four batters in the order accounted for all eight of the club’s hits with Dalton Pompey going 2/4, Jon Berti going 2/3 with another double and a walk, Matt Newman going 2/2 with two doubles, two walks and two RBI and Kevin Nolan going 2/4 with two doubles and three RBI.

Wil Browning contributed by going 1 1/3 innings and getting all four outs via the strikeout while Arik Sikula earned his 22nd save. The offense only had five hits including a two-run home run from Dwight Smith, Jr. (his eighth of the year). Kevin Patterson drove in the third run with a double.

Lansing Lugnuts 1, Clinton Lumberkings 2

Alonzo Gonzalez (a.k.a. Alonzo Gonzo) made a spot start for the Lugnuts and was very strong, allowing just one run in four innings, giving up two hits and two walks with four strikeouts. Jimmy Cordero was excellent through three innings, not allowing a run on three hits and one walk with two Ks. Brady Dragmire‘s defense let him down as he allowed the Lumberkings’ winning run thanks to an error by Dickie Joe Thon. The batters only got four hits including a triple by Justin Atkinson (he also walked). Dawel Lugo, Dickie Joe Thon and Daniel Klein all had singles with Lugo and Thon adding a walk.

Vancouver Canadians 10, Tri-City Dust Devils 6

Looking to finish the first half of the season with a division championship and playoff spot, the Vancouver Canadians sent Miguel Castro to the hill against the Tri-City Dust Devils. Castro threw six innings and allowed just two runs on four hits and three walks with five strikeouts. The offense was in high gear as Ryan McBroom led the way with three hits  but Franklin Barreto drove in three runs with a single, double a walk and a sacrifice Fly. Barreto also stole a base in a tour-de-force performance. Tim Locastro also got in on the action, going 2/4 with a single and double and two RBI while Roemon Fields went 2/5 and a stolen base and Ryan Metzler was 2/4. That was good enough to take a 10-2 lead into the ninth inning but Yefry Del Rosario got into trouble, getting charged with four runs (two were earned). Del Rosario left with the bases loaded, having allowed three runs and Francisco Gracesqui got out of the inning but allowed one of his inherited runners to score.

This win puts the Canadians in the driver’s seat for the division first-half title, giving them a half-game lead over the Spokane Indians. If the Indians lose tonight, the Canadians will be playoff bound yet again and will be able to challenge for their fourth-straight league championship.

Player of the Game: Franklin Barreto and Ryan McBroom

Bluefield Blue Jays 6, Pulaski Mariners 7

In another one-run loss, this time in 10 innings, the Bluefield Blue Jays came out on the wrong side of the score despite getting twice the number of hits as the Pulaski Mariners. The offense was generally clicking and Angel Rojas and Josh Almonte each had three-hit nights and Almonte added a walk and a stolen base. Rowdy Tellez was 2/4 with an RBI and a walk while Gabriel Cenas was 2/5 with an RBI. Richard Urena continues to hit well, going 2/6 with two runs and a stolen base. On the mound, Jesus Tinoco allowed four runs over his four innings but struck out five and Jordan Romano threw three perfect innings, striking out two. Oscar Cabrera blew the save and took the loss, giving up three runs (two earned) over the final 2 1/3 innings of the game.

Player of the Game: Josh Almonte and Angel Rojas

GCL Blue Jays 3, GCL Astros 8

The GCL Blue Jays took a loss with four runs allowed in the later innings by Turner Lee and another two (one earned) by Francisco Diaz. Grayson Huffman only allowed one hit through four innings, walking three and giving up just one run with three strikeouts. The offense only managed four hits with Gunnar Heidt driving in a run and hitting a double in his first pro game since signing with the Jays. Juan Tejada hit his fourth home run of the season.

Player of the Game: Juan Tejada and Grayson Huffman

Kelyn Jose gave up all three runs without retiring a batter. Leudy Garcia had three hits and four RBI while Manuel Herazo, Francisco Rodriguez and Enmanuel Moreta each had two hits with Herazo driving in a pair and scoring twice.
