July 21, 2017 Toronto Blue Jays Minor League Report

The top three teams in the Blue Jays’ minor league system came away with wins thanks to stellar pitching performances by the starters in all three games as the entire organization went 4-3 on the day.

 

Buffalo Bisons 13, Louisville Bats 2

The Buffalo Bisons rebounded from their series-opening loss on Thursday to beat the Louisville Bats 13-2 on Friday. Dwight Smith, Jr. (3/6, RBI, 3 R), Gregorio Petit (3/6, RBI, R), and Andrew Guillotte (3/4, 2B, 3B, BB, 2 R) each had three hits while Jon Berti (2/5, BB, RBI), Mike Ohlman (2/3, 3 BB, 2 RBI, R), Rowdy Tellez (2/6, 2 RBI, R) and Roemon Fields (2/5, RBI, 2 R) had two hits each. Jason Leblebijian was 1/4 with a home run and three RBI, taking a walk.

Brett Oberholtzer was strong in his start, tossing seven innings and giving up just two runs (one earned) on seven hits with six strikeouts. Taylor Cole made his Triple-A debut with a scoreless eighth, walking one and Matt Dermody pitched a scoreless ninth.

Roster Notes: Lucas Harrell was sent by the Blue Jays to Buffalo outright and Taylor Cole was assigned to the Bisons. Griffin Glaude was returned to the Lansing Lugnuts.

 

 

New Hampshire Fisher Cats 5, Trenton Thunder 1

The New Hampshire Fisher Cats got a strong start from their offense, scoring five runs in the first three innings on their way to a 5-1 win over the Trenton Thunder. Ryan McBroom was 1/4 with his 12th home run of the year, adding a walk, driving in two and scoring twice. Lourdes Gurriel was 2/3 with a walk and a run while Danny Jansen was 2/4 with a double and an RBI. Anthony Alford was 1/4 with a double, a walk and a run.

Sean Reid-Foley had his most dominant outing of the year, striking out 12 and walking just two in 6 2/3 innings, allowing four hits and two walks and just one run. Dusty Isaacs struck out two in 1 1/3 innings and Carlos Ramirez finished the game, walking one.

Roster Notes: Kender Villegas was assigned to the DUnedin Blue Jays and Anthony Alford was sent to New Hampshire for his rehab assignment. The Blue Jays assigned Reese McGuire to the GCL Blue Jays to begin a rehab assignment.

 

Dunedin Blue Jays 1, Lakeland Flying Tigers 0

 

The Dunedin Blue Jays got a pitching gem in a 1-0 defeat of the Lakeland Flying Tigers. Conor Fisk dominated the Flying Tigers, tossing eight innings of one-hit ball, striking out six and not walking anyone. Kirby Snead earned his sixth save with a perfect ninth, striking out one.

The offense only had four hits including a double from Bo Bichette while Darrell Ceciliani was 1/2. Cavan Biggio was 1/2 with a walk and Connor Panas was 1/2. J.C. Cardenas drove home the game’s only run with a sac fly.

Roster Notes: Taylor Cole was assigned back to the Buffalo Bisons and Kender Villegas was sent back to Dunedin from New Hampshire.

 

Lansing Lugnuts 3, Quad Cities River Bandits 14

After a reprieve on Thursday, the Lansing Lugnuts got hammered again by the Quad Cities River Bandits, losing 14-3 on Friday. Osman Gutierrez started and allowed six runs on six hits and four walks over three innings, pushing his season’s ERA to 10.13. He was followed by Juliandry Higuera who allowed seven runs on eight hits and two walks over three innings. Andrew Deramo pitched an inning and allowed a run on a hit and two walks before Griffin Glaude pitched a clean ninth in his return to Lansing.

Mitch Nay had a strong game at the plate, getting two of the Lugnuts’ five hits with a single and a double and two RBI. Nash Knight walked three times and scored once while Joshua Palacios was 1/4 with a walk, a run and a stolen base. Javier Hernandez was 1/3 with a walk.

Roster Notes: Griffin Glaude was sent back to Lansing from Buffalo.

 

Vancouver Canadians 6, Salem-Keizer Volcanoes 12

 

Reggie Pruitt

The Vancouver Canadians also had trouble with their opponents, losing 12-6 to the Salem-Keizer Volcanoes. Juan Nunez allowed nine of those runs, giving up eight hits and three walks over four innings. Grayson Huffman allowed three runs on two hits and two walks in his inning of work before Brayden Bouchey pitched two innings, just walking one and striking out two and Chris Hall finished with a scoreless ninth, striking out one.

Reggie Pruitt got his batting average up over .200 with three singles, adding two stolen bases and two runs. Logan Warmoth was 3/5 with a triple and an RBI, scoring a run. Kevin Vicuna was /4 with a walk, a stolen base and two runs and Kacy Clemens had the biggest blow, hitting his third home run and going 2/5 with four RBI and a stolen base. Riley Adams had the Canadians’ only other hit as the club concentrated all of their offense in the first five batters in the lineup.

Bluefield Blue Jays 8, Elizabethton Twins 5

 

The Bluefield Blue Jays’ rebounded from a rough loss, needing 13 innings to defeat the Elizabethton Twins 8-5 on Friday. Brandon Grudzielanek was 3/6 with two RBI and two runs while Reilly Johnson was 2/6 with an RBI. Ryan Noda was 2/4 with two walks, three runs and a stolen base and Tanner Kirwer was 2/6 with a run and an outfield assist.

Colton Laws tossed two innings, giving up a run on three hits with a strikeout. Alvaro Galindo threw six innings, giving up four runs (two earned) on six hits and a walk with one strikeout. Graham Spraker tossed three excellent innings of relief, giving up a hit and a walk with four strikeouts while Ty Tice picked up the win, throwing two scoreless innings, allowing two hits and a walk with two strikeouts.

GCL Blue Jays, GCL Braves

 

The GCL Blue Jays had their game suspended with an 8-2 lead after four innings against the GCL Braves. The game will be completed on July 22.

 

DSL Blue Jays 6, DSL Padres 7

 

The DSL Blue Jays dropped their Friday game against the DSL Padres 7-6. Steward Berroa was 2/4 with an RBI and Hugo Cardona was 2/4 with an RBI, two runs and a stolen base, accounting for four of the club’s six hits. Yeison Estevez was 0/1 but walked and drove in two runs with two sacrifice flies.

Emanuel Vizcaino started and gave up two runs on five hits and four strikeouts in 4 2/3 innings while Luis Mendoza finished the fifth and pitched the sixth, walking two. Jeison Contreras blew the save, giving up two runs in the seventh while Brayan Mejia gave up three more runs on two hits (including a home run) and a walk in the eighth. Jhon Victorino went the ninth and allowed a hit and a walk.
