July 2, 2021 Toronto Blue Jays Minor League Report

Despite several more games on the schedule that were rained out, the Toronto Blue Jays affiliates were 3-0 on Friday.

Buffalo Bisons 5, Lehigh Valley IronPigs (PHI) 2

The Buffalo Bisons managed to get through the first game of their scheduled double header with the Lehigh Valley IronPigs, winning 5-2.

Rowdy Tellez had the big blast, going 2/3 with a home run, a walk, two RBI and two runs. Kevin Smith also had a pair of hits, going 2/3 with a triple, a walk, an RBI and a run. Richard Urena, playing right field, was 2/3 with an outfield assist while Logan Warmoth was 1/3 and Danny Jansen was 1/4. Breyvic Valera was 0/2 but walked twice and scored and Dilson Herrera also walked twice, going 0/1 with a run scored. Tyler White brought home a run with a sac fly, going 0/2 with an RBI.

Connor Overton had a solid start, going five innings with two runs allowed on six hits and two walks, striking out three. Rafael Dolis made a rehab appearance, allowing a hit in one inning while John Axford earned the save, striking out one in a clean seventh.

Roster Notes: The Toronto Blue Jays recalled Nick Allgeyer and Anthony Castro from Buffalo and Patrick Murphy was optioned back to Buffalo from Toronto. Rafael Dolis was sent to Buffalo on a rehab assignment and Kevin Vicuna was sent to New Hampshire from Buffalo.

New Hampshire Fisher Cats, Portland Sea Dogs (BOS)

The New Hampshire Fisher Cats’ double header with Portland was rained out. One game is scheduled to be made up on July 3, the other on September 1.

Roster Notes: Austin Martin was activated off the injured list and James Dykstra was moved to the 60-day injured list. Kevin Vicuna was sent back to Double-A from Buffalo.

Vancouver Canadians 10, Everett AquaSox (SEA) 5

The Vancouver Canadians (27-25) pulled out a win, getting a consistent game from their offense and holding the Everett AquaSox to five runs in a 10-5 win.

Rafael Lantigua and Tanner Morris led the offense as each hit a home run and a double with Lantigua going 3/6 with two RBI and three runs and Morris going 3/5 with a walk, three RBI and two runs. Luis De Los Santos also had three hits, going 3/4 with two doubles, a walk and an RBI while Davis Schneider was 3/5 with a double and a run. Sebastian Espino was 2/5 with a walk, an RBI and two runs while Philip Clarke was 1/3 with a walk and a run. D.J. Neal was 1/4 with a triple and a walk, scoring a run while Eric Rivera was 1/5 with an RBI and a stolen base.

Starter Paxton Schultz only went 3 1/3 innings, allowing three runs on eight hits and three walks while striking out two before Cobi Johnson came on and allowed two more runs (after stranding two inherited runners) on two hits and two walks with three strikeouts in 1 2/3 innings. Parker Caracci walked two and struck out two in two innings and Roither Hernandez retired all six batters he faced, striking out one.

Dunedin Blue Jays 5, Palm Beach Cardinals (STL) 4

The Dunedin Blue Jays (21-30) turned things around squeaking out a 5-4 win over the Palm Beach Cardinals, holding them off despite the Cardinals scoring two runs in the bottom of the ninth to narrow the gap to just one run.

Starter Alejandro Melean had a strong game, going five innings and allowing just one run on two hits (one HR) with two walks and five strikeouts. Wilgenis Alvarado allowed a run on three hits (one HR) with a walk and a strikeout in three innings and Gabriel Ponce earned the save, allowing two runs on three hits and a walk with two strikeouts in the ninth.

Despite just scoring five runs, the offense rolled for 13 hits including three from Dasan Brown in the leadoff spot, going 3/4 with a triple but he was also picked off and caught stealing. Miguel Hiraldo also had three hits, going 3/5 with two doubles and two runs. Orelvis Martinez was 2/5 with a home run and two RBI, scoring once while Harrison Ray was 2/4 with a walk. P.K. Morris also hit a home run, going 1/4 with a walk, two RBI and a run and Mack Mueller was 1/4 with a walk, a double and a run, adding a stolen base. Zac Cook was 1/5 with a double and Anthony Morales was 1/5 but struck out four times. Steward Berroa walked twice and stole a base.

Game suspended in the top of the fourth with the Blue Jays in the lead 1-0.
