July 12, 2017 Toronto Blue Jays Minor League Report

With most of the minor leagues returning to action on Wednesday, the Blue Jays’ organization went 3-3 in six games with several players making a bang at their new levels.

Dunedin Blue Jays 4, Tampa Yankees 2

 

DJ Davis

The Dunedin Blue Jays beat the Tampa Yankees 4-2 on Wednesday, getting Bo Bichette‘s first Florida State League home run in the process. In other good news, Anthony Alford made his return to game action, joining the D-Jays on a rehab assignment and going 0/3. Bichette was 2/4 with a home run and three RBI while Juan Kelly was 2/3 with a run. D.J. Davis also had two hits, going 2/3 with a walk, an RBI, two stolen bases and two runs. Vladimir Guerrero, Jr. also made his FSL debut, going 0/4 with two strikeouts and an error.

Tayler Saucedo had a strong start, throwing four innings of scoreless ball, giving up four hits and two walks with three strikeouts. Ryan Cook gave up both Tampa runs, but only one was earned, on one hit and one walk in two innings. Kirby Snead picked up his first win with Dunedin, tossing two scoreless innings, giving up three hits and a walk and striking out three while Zach Jackson earned the save with a scoreless ninth, walking two and striking out one.

Roster Notes: Anthony Alford was sent to Dunedin on a rehab assignment. Lourdes Gurriel was promoted to New Hampshire.

 

Lansing Lugnuts 1, Beloit Snappers 11

 

Mitch Nay

The Lansing Lugnuts had righty Kyle Weatherly making his Lansing debut on the mound but it was memorable for all the wrong reasons as he didn’t get out of the first inning on the way to an 11-1 loss for the Lugnuts to the Beloit Snappers. Weatherly allowed six runs (five earned) on eight hits including a home run and was chased with just two outs in the first inning. Juliandry Higuera stranded the bases loaded but was charged with three runs (one earned) on four hits with four strikeouts in 3 1/3 innings. Connor Eller allowed his inherited runner to score, giving up a run of his own on three hits with two strikeouts in three innings. Andrew Deramo allowed a run in the eighth and Nick Hartman pitched a scoreless ninth, allowing two hits.

Mitch Nay was 2/4 with a double an Luis Silva, playing DH, was 2/4 with a double. Edward Olivares also hit a double for the Lugnuts.

Vancouver Canadians 4, Spokane Indians 6

 

The Vancouver Canadians made it close but ultimately lost 6-4 to the Spokane Indians despite a grand slam, the first home run of the year, from DH David Jacob. Jacob was 2/4 with the grand slam while Brock Lundquist was 2/4 with a run. Norberto Obeso and Cullen Large both had a single and a walk to get on base twice.

Brody Rodning tossed 2 1/3 scoreless innings, giving up two hits and two walks with one strikeout. Bobby Eveld finished the third, walking one and striking out one in 2/3 of an inning. Wilfri Aleton gave up six runs in the next five innings, allowing eight hits and three walks with five strikeouts while Orlando Pascual walked one and struck out two in the ninth.

Roster Notes: Logan Warmoth was promoted from the GCL to Vancouver.

 

Bluefield Blue Jays 3, Greeneville Astros 5

 

The Bluefield Blue Jays dropped their Wednesday game to the Greeneville Astros 5-3 despite team-leading Ryan Noda‘s fourth home run. Noda was 2/4 with the home run and two RBI to bring his batting average for the season to .507. Yorman Rodriguez is now hitting .362 after a 2/3 game that included a run and an RBI.

Randy Pondler got the start and gave up three runs on three hits and two walks with five strikeouts in five innings. Yonardo Herdenez tossed a perfect sixth, striking out one while Mitch McKown continued his comeback season with two scoreless frames, allowing one hit. Graham Spraker gave up two runs on two hits and a walk with two strikeouts in the ninth.

GCL Blue Jays 3, GCL Tigers West 2

 

Felipe Castaneda

The GCL Blue Jays held on to beat the GCL Tigers West by a 3-2 score getting a solid outing by rehabbing righty Taylor Cole as he works his way back to the upper minors. Cole struck out five batters but gave up two hits and a walk in two innings. Felipe Castaneda struck out six in 3 2/3 innings, giving up an unearned run on two hits and two walks while Anderson Nunez allowed an unearned run on three hits in 2 1/3 innings, blowing the save but earning the win. Adams Cuevas got the save, his third, with a scoreless ninth.

Jonelvy Molina hit a solo home run, going 1/3 while Aldo Ovando drove in a run, also going 1/3. Dominic Abbadessa was 1/4 with a triple and a run.

Roster Notes: Logan Warmoth was promoted to the Vancouver Canadians.

 

DSL Blue Jays 7, DSL D-backs1 6

 

The DSL Blue Jays built up a lead and held on to beat the DSL D-backs1 by a 7-6 score. Rafael Lantigua was 3/4 with a triple, an RBI and a run (while getting caught stealing) while Andres Martinez was 2/3 with a walk, an RBI and a run. Victor Figuereo was also 2/3 with a walk, adding a double and a run. William Saavedra was 1/3 with a double and a walk, scoring a run but he also allowed six of seven attempted base stealers to be successful.

Naswell Paulino gave up three runs in four innings in the start and Jeison Contreras allowed a run on two hits and two walks in just 1/3 of an inning. Luis Mendoza got his fourth win with 2 2/3 innings of scoreless ball, stranding the bases loaded, giving up a hit and two walks with two strikeouts. Jhon Victorino threw a perfect eighth and Yunior Hinojosa made things interesting, getting his seventh save but allowing two runs on two hits and a walk with one strikeout.
