While the major league team didn’t have a great day, losing to the Houston Astros 6-1, the minor league teams were generally solid, getting some great pitching performances from some names you should recognize.
Buffalo Bisons 2, Norfolk Tides 1
Sean Nolin made his second start back in Buffalo and doesn’t look like he’s missed a beat, needing only 81 pitches to throw five innings, allowing just one unearned run on three hits and one walk with two strikeouts. Mike Zagurski provided two scoreless innings of relief and Steve Delabar and Bobby Korecky finished off the game wiht an inning each. Providing some offense for the Bisons were Kevin Pillar who was 2/4 with a run and Sean Ochinko who was 2/3 with an RBI and a walk. Darin Mastroianni was 2/5 with a double.

New Hampshire Fisher Cats 7, Reading Fightin’ Phils 1
Daniel Norris was the story for the Fisher Cats as they took the final game of their series with the Reading Fightin’ Phils 7-1 on Sunday afternoon. Norris struggled to find his release point early but when he recovered, he was very good, throwing 6 2/3 innings in all and allowing just one run on a solo home run to start the fifth inning. He didn’t walk a batter (although he did hit one with a pitch) and he struck out eight. Mickey Storey relieved Norris and finished the game, allowing just two hits over 2 1/3 innings. Jon Berti had another great game with the bat, going 3/4 and stealing his 36th base of the season. K.C. Hobson had a two-RBI double to go with a walk and Jorge Flores was 2/4 with an RBI.

Dunedin Blue Jays 5, Palm Beach Cardinals 4
The Dunedin Blue Jays earned a walk-off win, scoring two runs in the ninth inning thanks to a bases loaded walk by Pierce Rankin and a game-winning single by Ian Parmley. For Parmley, it was his second hit and he was also on base twice more with two walks and he stole two bases. Pierce Rankin was 2/3 with two doubles, two RBI and two walks while Nick Baligod was 2/4 and scored twice. Brett Lawrie was 1/4 with a walk. On the mound, Ben White got the start and allowed two runs over six innings while Justin Jackson allowed the other two runs. Wil Browning pitched a scoreless inning of relief and picked up the win.
Roster Notes: Catcher Chris Schaeffer was assigned to Lansing from Dunedin while Aaron Munoz was sent down to Dunedin from New Hampshire (after being activated from the DL).
Player of the Game: Ian Parmley and Pierce Rankin
Lansing Lugnuts 3, Great Lakes Loons 4
Phil Kish was tagged for two runs (one earned) in the bottom of the ninth inning and the Lugnuts squandered a strong start from Chase De Jong. De Jong threw five outstanding innings, allowing just three hits and didn’t walk anyone while striking out five. The Lugnuts only had five hits including doubles from Mitch Nay (1/3, BB), D.J. Davis (1/4, 2B, 2 RBI) and Daniel Klein (1/3, RBI).

Vancouver Canadians 2, Boise Hawks 3
Despite continuing to be red hot, Franklin Barreto couldn’t single-handedly win a game for the Vancouver Canadians. Barreto was 2/5 but the rest of the lineup only had four hits, including one each from Max Pentecost, Ryan McBroom, Chris Carlson and Roemon Fields. Daniel Lietz was hit hard in his start, giving up seven hits and three runs over 3 1/3 innings but he also struck out six batters. Alberto Tirado had one of his best outings, going two innings and allowing just one hit while striking out three.

Bluefield Blue Jays 6, Burlington Royals 9
With a 25-game hitting streak on the line, Richard Urena was held hitless. Incidentally, only Urena and Lydell Moseby were hitless as every other starter had at least one hit with Gabriel Cenas getting two and driving in two runs. The pitching just wasn’t good with every pitcher allowing several runs. Joey Aquino went the first 5 2/3 before being charged with four runs and Tim Mayza was charged with three runs in only 1/3 of an inning. Conor Fisk allowed two runs over 1 2/3 innings.
