Despite a couple of strong pitching performances, the Blue Jays’ minor league affiliates had a rotten day, losing all seven completed games.

 

Buffalo Bisons 3, Gwinnett Braves 8

 

For the second consecutive night, the Buffalo Bisons allowed eight runs to the Gwinnett Braves, losing 8-3 this time. Chris Colabello hit his fourth home run of the season for the Bisons, going 2/3 with a walk and two RBI. Dalton Pompey was also on base three times, going 2/4 with a walk while Jesus Montero pushed his batting average to .321 with a 2/4 day that included a double and a run. Darrell Ceciliani hit his 10th home run, going 1/5 in the loss.

Casey Lawrence was tagged for five runs in his start, going 6 1/3 innings and allowing six hits and two walks with five strikeouts. Ryan Tepera gave up a run in 2/3 of an inning (allowing a home run with one of Lawrence’s runners aboard) and Chad Girodo gave up two more runs in the eighth.

Roster Notes: Ryan Tepera was sent back to Buffalo on Tuesday while Bobby Korecky was placed on the DL.

 

 

New Hampshire Fisher Cats 7, Portland Sea Dogs 10

 

The New Hampshire Fisher Cats couldn’t hold off the surging Portland Sea Dogs, and couldn’t rally their scoring potential enough to overcome a 10-7 match. Shane Dawson started and gave up six runs on seven hits and four walks in 6 1/3 innings with two strikeouts and Brady Dragmire completed the game with two innings of four-run, five-hit ball.

While no one hit a home run, Dwight Smith, Jr. continues his hot streak, going 2/4 with a double, a triple, a walk, two RBI and a run while Jason Leblebijian was 2/5 with a triple. Richard Urena also had two hits, going 2/4 with two RBI and a run while Ian Parmley was 1/3 with two RBI.

Dunedin Blue Jays 0, Tampa Yankees 3

 

For the second day in a row, the Dunedin Blue Jays allowed three runs to their opponent but their offense was ineffectual on Wednesday, getting just two hits (from Ryan McBroom and Jorge Flores) and taking a 3-0 shutout loss to the Tampa Yankees.

Justin Shafer was excellent in his start, allowing three hits and three walks with three strikeouts over six innings and getting 13 groundouts to just three flyouts. Francisco Rios pitched a solid seventh but was charged with two of the Yankees’ three runs in the eighth after he gave up two hits, leaving a runner on for Jose Fernandez who allowed the inherited runner to score and giving up a run of his own in 1/3 of an inning.

Lansing Lugnuts 1, Dayton Dragons 2

 

In a game that practically went down to the wire, the Lansing Lugnuts lost 2-1 to the Dayton Dragons. Juan Kelly was 1/3 with a solo home run and a walk and Justin Atkinson continues to hit well in the home stretch of the season with a 2/4 game that included a double.

Jordan Romano was outstanding, going six scoreless innings and allowing only two hits and a walk with 10 strikeouts along the way. Jackson Lowery was charged with both Dayton runs, blowing the save and taking the loss, giving up two runs on five hits and a walk over 1 1/3 innings. Andrew Case finished the game with 2/3 of an inning, letting one of the inherited runners from Lowery to score and walking one.

Vancouver Canadians 3, Boise Hawks 6

 

The Vancouver Canadians have been scuffling, and lost their fourth game of their last five 6-3 to the Boise Hawks on Wednesday. On the mound, Denis Diaz took most of the damage over the first two-plus innings, allowing five runs on six walks and three hits with just one strikeout. Grayson Huffman came in with two on and no one out in the third, letting one inherited runner score and gave up a run of his own in the fourth, throwing two innings with one charged run on two hits and two walks. Gabe Noyalis struck out three and walked three over his two innings, while Evan Smith also helped keep the Cs in the game with two hitless innings, walking one and striking out three before Nick Hartman gave up a hit and a walk in the ninth with a strikeout.

The batters combined for 10 hits leading to three runs with catcher Josh Reavis leading the way with a double, a home run and two RBI. Bryan Lizardo (2/5, 2B) and Rodrigo Orozco (2/3, BB, R) had two hits each while J.B. Woodman (1/3, BB) and Cavan Biggio (1/4, BB) each were on base twice.

Bluefield Blue Jays 2, Pulaski Yankees 8

 

The Pulaski Yankees scored first and often, hitting four home runs in beating the Bluefield Blue Jays 8-2. Joel Espinal allowed four runs in five innings, giving up six hits and two walks with three strikeouts. Kelyn Jose held the Yankees at bay for two innings despite struggling with his control, walking three and throwing two wild pitches. Andrew Deramo had a night to forget, allowing three home runs, leading to four runs (three earned) on four hits over two innings despite striking out three.

Nick Sinay was 2/5 with a triple and a stolen base (his 28th) while Vladimir Guerrero, Jr. was 1/2 with a double, two walks, an RBI and a run.

Roster Notes: Joel Espinal was sent back to the GCL Blue Jays after the game.

 

GCL Blue Jays 4, GCL Phillies 9

 

In a battle of the top two teams in the Gulf Coast League, the GCL Phillies won to reclaim sole possession of the top spot in their division with a 9-4 win over the GCL Blue Jays. Josh Winckowski gave up three runs over 3 2/3 innings, allowing six hits and a walk with two strikeouts before giving way to Gregor Mora, a 20-year-old Venezuelan righty making his second appearance with the GCL Blue Jays. Mora went 1 1/3 innings and gave up just a hit and struck out one, stranding the bases loaded. Travis Hosterman went two innings and was hit for five runs on five hits and two walks with two strikeouts before Orlando Pascual gave up another run on a solo home run among two hits in the eighth.

David Jacob hit his sixth home run of the season, going 2/4 while Chavez Young was also 2/4. Francisco Rodriguez was 1/4 with a double and two RBI.
