August 21, 2017 Toronto Blue Jays Minor League Report

The Toronto Blue Jays’ minor league affiliates were 3-4 in the aggregate but had a huge day in Buffalo from the club’s fastest-rising catcher and a home run from one of the team’s top prospects in New Hampshire.

 

Buffalo Bisons 6, Pawtucket Red Sox 3

 

The Buffalo Bisons got a big boost in the top of the ninth to vault themselves over a 3-2 deficit to the Pawtucket Red Sox and beat them 6-3 in the final. Two home runs in the ninth got the job done including the second one off the bat of catcher Danny Jansen who had a career day, hitting two home runs, going 4/4 with a triple, two RBI and two runs. That one day gives Jansen a nice, round, .500 average for his time in Buffalo. Christian Lopes also hit a home run in the ninth, going 2/5 with three RBI and Gregorio Petit hit his home run in the second inning, going 2/4 with two runs.

Brett Oberholtzer had another solid start, throwing six innings of two-run ball, giving up six hits and a walk with six strikeouts. John Stilson threw 2/3 of an inning, giving up a run on three hits  and Carlos Ramirez stranded the bases loaded and threw 2 1/3 perfect innings to finish out the game.

New Hampshire Fisher Cats 7, Binghamton Rumble Ponies 6

The New Hampshire Fisher Cats also needed some late-inning heroics, and got it, beating the Binghamton Rumble  Ponies 7-6 in 10 innings. The Fisher Cats won thanks to a bases-loaded walk in the top of the 10th inning with Derrick Loveless “driving in” Harold Ramirez. Jonathan Davis launched his 10th home run of the season, going 2/6 with two RBI, two runs and a stolen base while Anthony Alford was 2/5 with a double, a home run, two runs and a stolen base. Emilio Guerrero (2/5, 2B, R), Derrick Loveless (2/4, 2B, BB, 2 RBI, R) and Richard Urena (2/5, 2B) all had two hits.

Jon Harris went five innings, giving up six runs (four earned) on four hits (including a home run) and three walks while striking out two and Kender Villegas followed with  three scoreless innings, giving up two hits and a walk. Danny Young pitched the final two innings, retiring all six batters he faced for the win.

Lansing Lugnuts 7, South Bend Cubs 8

 

Mitch Nay

The Lansing Lugnuts took things to 11 innings and even came within one run of the South Bend Cubs after they scored two in the top of the 11th but ended up losing 8-7. Mitch Nay blasted his eighth home run of the year, going 2/4 with a double, a walk, an RBI and two runs while Kevin Vicuna was 4/6 with a run and a stolen base. J.B. Woodman was 2/5 with two doubles and two RBI and Javier Hernandez went 2/4 with an RBI. Nick Sinay broke the Midwest League record with his 37th hit-by-pitch and was 1/2 with two walks and a run.

Yennsy Diaz started, giving up four runs on five hits and four walks with four strikeouts in four innings before Juliandry Higuera took over, giving up a run on two hits and a walk in three innings. Nick Hartman therew a scoreless eighth and Andrew Deramo blew the save, allowing an unearned run on two hits and three walks in 1 2/3 innings with two strikeouts. Griffin Glaude took the loss, giving up two runs in 1 1/3 innings.

Vancouver Canadians 2, Everett AquaSox 4

The Vancouver Canadians scored single runs in the eighth and ninth but couldn’t overcome the four runs from the Everett AquaSox, falling 4-2. Riley Adams was 2/4 with a walk and Bryan Lizardo was 2/4 with an RBI. Kacy Clemens was 1/3 with a double, two walks, an RBI and a run and Logan Warmoth had a single and a walk.

Jose Espada had an excellent start, holding the AquaSox to just two hits and a walk in six innings of scoreless ball, striking out six. Grayson Huffman took the loss, giving up four runs (one earned) on three hits in the seventh and Chris Hall and Brayden Bouchey each tossed a scoreless inning to finish the game.

Roster Notes: Marcus Reyes and Joe DiBenedetto were promoted from Bluefield to Vancouver while Dany Jimenez was sent from Vancouver to the GCL.

 

Bluefield Blue Jays 12, Burlington Royals 4

 

The Bluefield Blue Jays slugged their way to another victory over the Burlington Royals, this time beating them 12-4. Six Blue Jays had two hits apiece with Ryan Noda driving in four runs, going 2/5 with a double and two runs, adding a stolen base. Chavez Young was 2/4 with two RBI and two runs while Kevin Smith was 2/5 with two doubles, an RBI and a stolen base. Brandon Grudzielanek was 2/5 with an RBI and Freddy Rodriguez was 2/5 with two runs. Jesus Severino was 2/5 with two RBI and two runs.

Elio Silva had a solid outing, giving up two runs on five hits (including a home run) with six strikeouts in five innings. Kelyn Jose gave up a solo home run among two hits and a walk despite striking out the side in the sixth. Mitch McKown was charged with an unearned run over two innings with three strikeouts and Ty Tice struck out the side in the ninth.

GCL Blue Jays 6, GCL Pirates 7

 

Yhordegny Kelly

Despite late rallies in the sixth, eighth and ninth innings, the GCL Blue Jays lost 7-6 to the GCL Pirates on Monday. D.J. Neal drove in three runs, going 2/5 with a stolen base while Yhordegny Kelly was 2/4 with a double, two RBI, a walk and two runs. Aldo Ovando was 2/4 with two runs and D.J. Daniels was 2/5 with an RBI. Joseph Reyes was on base twice with a single and a walk, scoring once and Davis Schneider walked twice.

Maverik Buffo gave up four runs but just one was earned as he allowed eight hits and a walk in 4 2/3 innings with four strikeouts. Juan Meza held things at bay, going 1 1/3, giving up just a hit and striking out one. Dany Jimenez allowed two runs (one earned) on a hit with a strikeout in the eighth and Anderson Nunez gave up a run in the ninth on two walks and two wild pitches.

Player of the Game: Yhordegny Kelly and D.J. Neal

Roster Notes: Dany Jimenez arrived in the GCL from Vancouver while Connor Law and Jonathan Cheshire moved up to Bluefield.

 

DSL Blue Jays 1, DSL White Sox 2

 

The DSL Blue Jays dropped Monday’s game 2-1 to the DSL White Sox. Naswell Paulino had a solid outing, giving up two runs on four hits (including a home run) with three strikeouts over five innings. Alexander Molina finished the game with three scoreless frames, giving up two hits and striking out two.

Hector Guerrero was 3/4 with a run while Jose Briceno was 2/4 and Kenny Mauricio was also 2/4.
