August 20, 2017 Toronto Blue Jays Minor League Report

Out of their six scheduled games, the Blue Jays’ minor league clubs won three and lost three as a couple of former first-round picks continue to have strong performances down the stretch.

 

Buffalo Bisons 1, Gwinnett Braves 7

 

Roemon Fields

The Buffalo Bisons had trouble with the bats for the second straight game as they lost 7-1 to the Gwinnett Braves. The Bisons had just three hits including a single (and a walk) from Roemon Fields who drove in the club’s only run, a double from Jon Berti who stole a base and scored, and a triple and a walk from Dwight Smith Jr.

Luis Santos allowed five runs (three earned) over five innings, allowing five hits and two walks with five strikeouts. Justin Shafer, in his Triple-A debut, gave up a run on three hits and one walk with two strikeouts in two innings. Jeff Beliveau allowed an unearned run in the eighth and Mike Bolsinger pitched a scoreless ninth.

Roster Notes: Justin Shafer was promoted to Buffalo from New Hampshire.

 

 

New Hampshire Fisher Cats 5, Altoona Curve 6

 

Reese McGuire

The New Hampshire Fisher Cats had a two-run lead going into the top of the ninth but couldn’t hang on and ultimately lost 6-5 in 10 innings to the Altoona Curve. Ryan Borucki allowed just two runs on five hits and two walks with five strikeouts over six innings before Shane Dawson gave up a run, walking three and giving up two hits in two innings. Andrew Case allowed two more runs in the ninth before Jose Fernandez took the loss, allowing a run in the 10th.

Reese McGuire continues to swing a red-hot bat, going 3/5 with a double, an RBI and two runs. Emilio Guerrero drove in two, going 2/5 with a double while Anthony Alford was on base three times, going 2/4 with a walk, a double and a run.

Dunedin Blue Jays 8, St. Lucie Mets 0

 

The Dunedin Blue Jays had their game called early giving Jordan Romano his seventh win of the season as they trounced the St. Lucie Mets 8-0. Romano went 5 1/3 innings of scoreless baseball, allowing three hits and three walks with two strikeouts. Philip Walby finished the last inning, giving up a hit and a walk with one strikeout.

D.J. Davis was 4/4 with a stolen base, an RBI and a run while Connor Panas was a home run shy of the cycle, going 3/4 with a single, a double and a triple and two runs. Luke Maile drove in a pair, going 2/3 while Vladimir Guerrero Jr. was on four times, going 2/3 with two walks and an RBI. J.C. Cardenas was also on base twice, going 1/3 with a walk, a run and a stolen base.

Roster Notes: Tom Koehler was assigned to the Dunedin Blue Jays.

 

Lansing Lugnuts 6, South Bend Cubs 8

 

Rodrigo Orozco

The Lansing Lugnuts couldn’t beat the South Bend Cubs, scoring six runs early but eventually losing 8-6. Andy Ravel pitched 5 2/3 innings, giving up five runs on 10 hits (including two home runs) with two walks and one strikeout. Yonardo Herdenez allowed a further three runs, taking the loss, giving up five hits and a walk in 3 1/3 innings.

The Lugnuts had 10 hits, getting a single and a triple from Rodrigo Orozco who also took a walk. Joshua Palacios was 2/4 with a double, a walk, two runs and a stolen base while J.B. Woodman was 2/4 with an RBI and two runs, adding a stolen base. David Jacob was 1/4 with a walk and two RBI while Yeltsin Gudino was 1/3 with a walk, an RBI and a stolen base.

Vancouver Canadians 5, Everett AquaSox 3

 

Wilfri Aleton

The Vancouver Canadians got a strong pitching performance in a 5-3 victory over the Everett AquaSox. Wilfri Aleton started and tossed five scoreless innings, giving up just four hits and one walk with six strikeouts. Donnie Sellers allowed two runs on five hits and a walk in three innings, striking out four. Despite giving up a run in the ninth, Orlando Pascual picked up his fourth save, striking out two.

Brandon Polizzi hit his first professional home run, going 1/3 with a walk, an RBI and two runs. Reggie Pruitt had two hits, going 2/4 with a double, two RBI and a run, stealing his 26th base. Norberto Obeso was on base three times, with a 2/3 day, walking once and driving in a run. Bryan Lizardo was also on twice, with a single and a walk.

Bluefield Blue Jays 14, Burlington Royals 5

 

Freddy Rodriguez

The Bluefield Blue Jays blasted the Burlington Royals 14-5 on Sunday. Freddy Rodriguez was a double short of the cycle, going 3/4 with a triple, a home run, four RBI and two runs. Chavez Young also hit a home run, going 3/4 with a homer, two RBI and two runs. Kevin Smith was 2/4 with two doubles, a walk, two RBI and a run and Brandon Grudzielanek was 2/5 with a double, tripl,e two RBI and two runs. Antony Fuentes was 2/5 with a double, an RBI and a run while Reilly Johnson (2/5, 2B, R) and Jesus Navarro (2/5, RBI, 2 R) also had two hits each.

Maximo Castillo got the win, giving up four runs on six hits (including a home run) with six strikeouts over five innings. JOse Nova gave up a run on four hits and a walk with three strikeouts and Joe DiBenedetto pitched a clean ninth to finish the game.
