August 19, 2017 Toronto Blue Jays Minor League Report

With two double headers on the books the Blue Jays minor league clubs went 5-5 on Saturday, getting home runs from a couple of their top prospects both of whom have been red hot in the past few games.

 

Buffalo Bisons 0, Gwinnett Braves 1

 

The offense deserted the Buffalo Bisons who had just one hit in a 1-0 loss to the Gwinnett Braves. Dwight Smith Jr. was the only one with a hit and he added a walk in the loss.

Brett Anderson made his Buffalo debut, tossing four innings of one-run ball, giving up three hits and striking out one. Chad Girodo provided three innings of scoreless relief, giving up two hits and walk with three strikeouts and Chris Smith finished the game with two innings of two-hit ball.

Player of the Game: None

Roster Notes: T.J. House had his contract selected by the Blue Jays while Tim Mayza was optioned to Buffalo and Mike Ohlman was sent to Buffalo outright.

 

 

New Hampshire Fisher Cats 5, Altoona Curve 7

 

The New Hampshire Fisher Cats lost Game 1 of their double header 7-5 to the Altoona Curve. Reese McGuire is swinging a hot bat, and he hit his third home run in as many games, giving him five on the year and he went 2/2 with two walks. Richard Urena was 2/4 with a double and an RBI while Emilio Guerrero was 2/4 with a double and two runs. Gunnar Heidt also had two hits in the loss. Jonathan Davis was 1/4 with a triple and an RBI while Anthony Alford was 1/3 with a walk.

Sean Reid-Foley started and tossed five innings, giving up six runs on 11 hits (including one home run) and three walks with five strikeouts in 5 1/3 innings. Dusty Isaacs allowed the two inherited runners to score and gave up one himself in 1 2/3 innings, striking out three.

New Hampshire Fisher Cats 5, Altoona Curve 1

 

In the second half of their double header against the Altoona Curve, the New Hampshire Fisher Cats turned the tables with a 5-1 win. Lourdes Gurriel was 2/2 with a two-run home run and a double, scoring three times while Emilio Guerrero had another two htis, going 2/3 with a double and two RBI and Harold Ramirez was 2/3 with a run. Anthony Alford was 1/3 with a stolen base and a run.

Conner Greene had a much better outing in this time around, throwing five innings and giving up just one run on four hits and two walks with three strikeouts to earn the win. Danny Young allowed three hits and a walk in 1 1/3 innings and left two runners on for Andrew Case who retired both batters he faced to pick up his seventh save.

Dunedin Blue Jays 3, St. Lucie Mets 6

 

Vladimir Guerrero

The Dunedin Blue Jays lost another game to the St. Lucie Mets despite another home run from the team’s top prospect. With Bo Bichette still out, Vladimir Guerrero Jr. has taken over and went 2/4 with a double and a home run. Michael De La Cruz was 2/4 with a run and a stolen base while Connor Panas was 1/4 with a double and a run. Juan Kelly was 1/2 with a walk and a sacrifice fly.

John Straka gave the club five solid innings, allowing three runs on six hits with four strikeouts. Daniel Liez gave up three runs (two earned) on two hits and two walks in an inning while Zach Jackson struck out the side in the seventh, walking one. Bobby Eveld made his Dunedin debut, striking out a pair in the seventh.

Lansing Lugnuts 3, South Bend Cubs 5

 

Nick Sinay

After tying up the game at three in the bottom of the seventh, the Lansing Lugnuts let the game get away, giving up two runs in the top of the eighth in a 5-3 loss to the South Bend Cubs. Mike Ellenbest was on the hill to start and provided the club with 5 2/3 solid innings, giving up just three runs on six hits and two walks with three strikeouts. Jared Carkuff allowed two more runs to take the loss over 2 1/3 innings and Nick Hartman gave up just a hit in the ninth.

Nick Sinay tried to run the club to a victory, going 2/3 with a hit-by-pitch and two stolen bases and scoring a run. Joshua Palacios was 2/3 with two walks, an RBI and a run while Yeltsin Gudino was 2/5. J.B. Woodman was also on base twice, going 1/3 with a hit-by-pitch and a run.

Roster Notes: Osman Gutierrez was traded to the Marlins for veteran pitcher Tom Koehler.

 

Vancouver Canadians 10, Spokane Indians 1

 

Owen Spiwak

The Vancouver Canadians brought the thunder to Spokane as they beat up the Indians 10-1 on Saturday. Samad Taylor (1/4, HR, 2 RBI, BB) and Owen Spiwak (1/4, HR, 4 RBI, BB) each hit home runs with Spiwaks’ being a grand slam while Reggie Pruitt (1/3, BB, 2 R), Norberto Obeso (1/5, BB, 2B, RBI, R), Brock Lundquist (1/4, BB, R) and Bryan Lizardo (1/4, BB, RBI, R) each had a hit and a walk. Cam O’Brien was 2/4 with a run and a hit-by-pitch.

Dalton Rodriguez threw 3 1/3 innings of scoreless ball, giving up four hits and striking out five. Miguel Burgos got the win, giving up a run on three hits and two walks and Jake Fishman earned a three-inning save giving up three hits and a walk.

Bluefield Blue Jays 6, Johnson City Cardinals 1

 

The Bluefield Blue Jays rebounded with a win after two losses to the Johnson City Cardinals, beating them 6-1 on Saturday. Randy Pondler was in control, going six innings and giving up just one run on seven hits and a walk with three strikeouts. Graham Spraker completed the game and picked up his seventh save with three scoreless innings, giving up a hit and striking out three.

Kevin Smith was 3/5 with a double, an RBI, a run and two stolen bases while five other Blue Jays had two hits each in the 15-hit attack. Chavez Young was 2/5 with a run and an outfield assist, Yorman Rodriguez was 2/5 with an RBI. Ryan Noda was 2/4 with two doubles and a run while Ryan Gold was 2/4 with a double, an RBI and a run. Jesus Navarro was 2/4 with a triple, an RBI and a run while Freddy Rodriguez also hit a triple, going 1/4 with an RBI and a run.

Player of the Game: Kevin Smith

 

GCL Blue Jays 4, GCL Tigers East 3

 

The GCL Blue Jays scored two in the bottom of the ninth to complete the comeback and defeat the GCL Tigers East 4-3 in the completion of their suspended game from Friday. Matthew Gunter threw four innings, giving up two runs on five hits and two walks with three strikeouts before Emerson Jimenez threw a scoreless fifth despite giving up two walks and a hit. Gaudy Ramirez allowed just one walk with two strikeouts in two innings and Adams Cuevas allowed a run on two hits but he threw the last two innings of the game, earning the win.

D.J. Neal was 2/5 with a double and an RBI, scoring a run while Jose Theran was 1/4 with a double. Otto Lopez drove in another run, going 1/3 and Yhordegny Kelly walked twice.

GCL Blue Jays 12, GCL Tigers East 9

 

In their regularly scheduled game, the GCL Blue Jays came up with a 12-9 victory over the Tigers East. D.J Neal made it a four-hit double header as he went 2/5 with a double and a home run, driving in three and taking a walk with two runs. Joseph Reyes also had two hits, going 2/3 with three walks and a run. Otto Lopez was 2/3 with two walks, a double, a home run, three RBI, two runs and a stolen base. Aldo Ovando was 1/3 with two walks and two runs while Davis Schneider was 1/4 with a double, two walks and a run. Hagen Danner was on twice, going 1/5 with a double, a walk, two RBI and a run and Luis De Los Santos was 1/4 with a walk, an RBI and a run.

Justin Watts started and allowed four runs (one earned) on five hits with two strikeouts in three innings. Emmanuel Reyes allowed another four runs (three earned) on four hits and three walks in 1 2/3 innings. Jonathan Cheshire was credited with the win, going 2 1/3 innings with a hit allowed and three strikeouts before Connor Law finished it up with a run over two innings with two strikeouts.

Player of the Game: D.J. Neal and Otto Lopez

 

DSL Blue Jays 3, DSL Mariners 4

 

The DSL Blue Jays were swept in their home-and-away series against the DSL Mariners, losing 9-4 on Saturday, making six errors in the field. The offense managed just five hits including a single and a double, two RBI and a run from Rafael Lantigua and two singles and a run from Hugo Cardona who also stole his 15th base.

Yohandy Martir gave up just one run on a solo home run among three hits in three innings while Jeison Contreras threw two scoreless innings, walking one and striking out one before the wheels fell off. Geremy Jimenez took the loss, giving up five runs (three earned) on two hits and two walks in 1 1/3 innings and Nicolas Medina allowed a run on two hits and a walk in 2/3 of an inning. Brayan Mejia finished the game, striking out three in two innings but giving up two runs on three hits and a walk.
