No big league game for the Blue Jays! Let’s talk minor leagues!

Buffalo Bisons 2, Norfolk Tides 4

On Getaway Day, the Bisons couldn’t handle the Tides and their pitching staff and Raul Valdes got hit enough to allow four runs through five innings. Mike Zagurski and Kyle Drabek each contributed two shutout innings. George Kottaras made it into the lineup for the Bisons, going 1/4 but Andy LaRoche had two hits and Brad Glenn doubled and walked, scoring twice.

New Hampshire Fisher Cats 2, Richmond Flying Squirrels 6

In game one of a double header, P.J. Walters had a very strange line, allowing four runs (three earned) on six hits and two walks through four innings, but he also struck out nine batters. Justin Jackson made his Double-A debut and allowed a run on a hit and two walks in one inning while Scott Gracey allowed a run over two innings. Kevin Nolan, back in Double-A, was 2/3 and Andy Burns had the team’s only extra-base hit: a double.

New Hampshire Fisher Cats 4, Richmond Flying Squirrels 3

Michael Lee made his second start for the Fisher Cats and it wasn’t as good as his first as he allowed two home runs to the Flying Squirrels, giving up four runs over five innings until Randy Boone closed the door (but not before letting his two inherited runners score). Matt Newman hit a double and two sac flies, going 1/1 with three RBI while Jorge Flores was 2/3.

Dunedin Blue Jays 3, Clearwater Threshers 1

Taylor Cole was pretty dominant after coming back to Dunedin, striking out nine batters in just five innings and allowing only one run but walking four. Tony Davis threw two shutout innings and Wil Browning and Arik Sikula each followed with a scoreless frame of his own with Sikula picking up his 29th save of the season. On offense, Shane Opitz was 3/3 while Christian Lopes continues to be hot, going 2/4 with a double. Gustavo Pierre hit a home run, driving in a pair.

Lansing Lugnuts 6, Fort Wayne TinCaps 1

For a nice change of pace, the Lansing Lugnuts weren’t in a particularly close game. Brad Allen allowed only one unearned run over five innings and, you guessed it, struck out nine. Matt Dermody and Roberto Espinosa combined for the last four innings without giving up a hit. Derrick Loveless had a double and a triple, going 2/4 with two RBI while Justin Atkinson added a triple of his own, going 2/4 and Jason Leblebijian was also 2/4 with two RBI.

Vancouver Canadians 2, Everett AquaSox 4

Starter Jairo Labourt did his job, going five innings and allowing just one run on two hits and two walks with six strikeouts for the C’s. All of the relievers each allowed a run, though, enabling the AquaSox to get a leg up on the Canadians, who didn’t provide much offense. The club’s five hits came from five different players and Franklin Barreto‘s two RBI were the team’s only runs.

Bluefield Blue Jays 7, Princeton Rays 2

The pitching was on tonight as Evan Smith threw five scoreless innings, allowing just two hits and one walk with five strikeouts. Oscar Cabrera picked up a win but allowed the Rays’ only runs in two innings while Dusty Isaacs earned his seventh save with two perfect innings, striking out four. The top three players in the batting order as well as the number nine hitter all had two hits each while Gabriel Cenas was the only player without a hit on the night. Catcher Kevin Garcia was 2/4 with a home run and two RBI while Richard Urena was 2/5 with a double and two RBI, Austin Davis was 2/3 with a walk and Josh Almonte was 2/4 with a run and an RBI.

GCL Blue Jays 6, GCL Yankees1 8

The first game of a double header went nine innings to break the tie but the Yankees came out on top. Jake Brentz wasn’t great, allowing six runs over three innings but he only walked one and struck out five. Turner Lee threw four no-hit innings, walking two but J.T. Autrey gave up the two Yankees runs in the ninth inning. Deiferson Barreto, Freddy Rodriguez, Nathan DeSouza and Dave Pepe all had a pair of hits with DeSouza hitting a double.

GCL Blue Jays 2, GCL Yankees1 4

Completing the sweep of the double header, the Yankees team won a lower scoring game in the back half. Daniel Rodriguez started and allowed four runs (three earned) in two innings but Bobby Wheatley picked him up with four one-hit, one-walk innings, striking out four. Juan Kelly had two of the club’s four hits.

Player of the Game: Bobby Wheatley

DSL Blue Jays 8, DSL Tigers 15

Two hits for Enmanuel Moreta were the highlight for the Blue Jays although the club took 10 walks (including two by Moreta and Francisco Rodriguez and three by Bryan Lizardo).
