While there weren’t any double headers, there were several extra-inning games in the Jays’ system on Wednesday.

Buffalo Bisons 6, Rochester Red Wings 5

Despite a nearly catastrophic bullpen meltdown, the Buffalo Bisons emerged triumphant in their single game against the Rochester Red Wings on Wednesday. The offense staked the Bisons to a 6-1 lead but the Red Wings rallied for four runs (three earned) against Joba Chamberlain in the ninth before Ben Rowen finished the game with the save. Ezequiel Carrera saved the day, throwing out the potential tying run at the plate in the top of the ninth, ending the game. The meltdown almost wasted another outstanding performance from Randy Wolf who picked his ninth win of the season to move his record to 9-1. Wolf allowed just one run on six hits and a walk with six strikeouts while Steve Delabar struck out the side in the seventh and Greg Infante pitched a scoreless eighth.

Andy Burns led the offense, going 3/4 with a single, a double and a home run, driving in four and pushing his batting average to .298 with the Bisons. Jon Berti and Dalton Pompey each had two hits with Berti contributing a double and Pompey taking a walk, stealing a base and scoring twice.

Roster Notes: Munenori Kawasaki was activated by the Bisons and OF Roemon Fields was sent down to New Hampshire.

Player of the Game: Andy Burns and Randy Wolf

New Hampshire Fisher Cats 3, Akron Aeros 7

The Fisher Cats’ slump continues, as the club lost their fourth straight game 7-3 to the Akron Aeros. Melky Mesa went deep, hitting a solo home run while Dwight Smith, Jr. was 1/2 with three walks and an RBI. Martin Medina was 2/3 with a triple and a run.

Taylor Cole had a solid start but was bitten by the home run bug again, giving up two solo dingers among only five hits and three walks in seven innings, accounting for three runs against. John Anderson retired all five batters he faced but it was Blake McFarland who allowed the four runs (all unearned) in the top of the tenth inning to take the loss.

Roster Notes: OF Matt Newman was placed on the and Roemon Fields was demoted from Buffalo.

Player of the Game: Dwight Smith, Jr.

Dunedin Blue Jays 3, Daytona Tortugas 10

Andy Fermin

The Dunedin Blue Jays continue to recover their winning ways, losing their second straight game to the Daytona Tortugas 10-3. While the Blue Jays scored three runs yesterday, they only had six hits, getting two from Andy Fermin and another two from Jonathan Davis (J.D.). Sean Reid-Foley was on the mount to start, allowing four runs over 3 2/3 innings, giving up four hits and three walks with three strikeouts. Brad Allen allowed another two runs over three innings, also having trouble finding the strike zone, walking three batters. Matt Dermody was tagged for four runs on seven hits over 2 1/3 innings to finish the game.

Player of the Game: Andy Fermin and J.D. Davis

Lansing Lugnuts 5, Clinton LumberKings 6

The Lansing Lugnuts also played an extra-innings game but they ended up on the wrong side of the ledger as the Clinton Lumberkinds walked one off in the 11th. Jon Wandling made his first Lansing start and surrendered five runs on six hits and three walks over five innings, putting the Lugnuts behind the eight ball right from the start. Dusty Isaacs provided three excellent innings of relief, allowing just a hit and a walk with six strikeouts while Tim Mayza struck out four in 2 1/3 innings, but gave up an unearned run.

The Lugnuts had 12 hits including two each from Chris Carlson (2/6, 3B, R), David Harris (2/6, 2B) and Michael De La Cruz (2/5, 2B, BB). D.J. Davis was on base five times with a single, a double, three walks, a stolen base, two runs and an RBI. Lane Thomas was 0/5 and is still seeking his first hit as a Lugnuts.

Player of the Game: D.J. Davis

Vancouver Canadians 2, Hillsboro Hops 3

Ryan Metzler

While this one didn’t go extra innings, it was a close game as the Vancouver Canadians gave up two runs in the bottom of the eighth to let the victory slip away after scoring in the top of the eighth to take the lead. Tayler Saucedo had a second strong start for the Cs, allowing only one run over 5 2/3 innings despite walking four (and striking out four). Stuart Holmes relieved him, pitching effectively through 1 1/3 innings but couldn’t get anyone out in the eighth while Brandon Hinkle allowed two runs (charged to Holmes) to score before finishing the inning. The Canadians offense struck out 12 times and only had three hits including a double from Sean Hurley and a home run and two RBI from Ryan Metzler.

Roster Notes: Angel Perdomo was promoted from Bluefield to Vancouver.

Player of the Game: Ryan Metzler

Bluefield Blue Jays 3, Pulaski Yankees 2

The Bluefield Blue Jays beat the Yankees for a change thanks to a couple of home runs and some great pitching. Rodrigo Orozco continues to be the offensive catalyst for the Bluefield Blue Jays (who will probably be promoted to Vancouver by the time I get to Bluefield on Monday) by going 2/5 with a double, a home run and an RBI. Deiferson Barreto was 3/4 and Andres Sotillo was 2/4 with an RBI. Juan Tejada hit the other home run for the Blue Jays, going 1/2 with two walks, and an RBI.

Geno Encina had a great start, going five innings and giving up two runs (one earned) on three hits and he struck out six without walking anyone. Joe Claver walked three over two innings but didn’t give up a hit and Alberto Guzman earned the win with two innings of scoreless ball, allowing a hit and two walks but striking out three.

Roster Notes: Angel Perdomo was promoted to Vancouver.

Player of the Game: Rodrigo Orozco and Geno Encina

GCL Blue Jays 8, GCL Yankees1 7

The GCL Blue Jays continue to hit well and moved their record to 26-15 on the season with a walkoff victory (thanks to a fielding error) against the Yankees. Despite the error, Cliff Brantley was 2/3 with a home run, two walks and two runs while Bryan Lizardo was 2/4 with a double and an RBI, also scoring a run. Levi Scott was on three times, hitting a double, walking twice and driving in a run while Reggie Pruitt was 1/4 with two RBI and a walk and Jake Thomas was 1/4 with a triple, a walk and an RBI.

The Yankees got to Jose Espada for four runs (three earned) over five innings but three of those came in the sixth inning (after he allowed the first three runners to reach). Juan Nunez allowed two of Espada’s inherited runners to score and gave up three of his own runs (one earned) over two innings. Gunner Eastman walked two and gave up a hit over two innings but struck out two and picked up the win.

Player of the Game: Cliff Brantley

DSL Blue Jays 2, DSL White Sox 3

In yet another extra-inning game, the DSL Blue Jays came up short to the White Sox as the White Sox walked it off in the 12th inning. Kevin Vicuna led the offense with three hits but he also made his 27th error of the season. Jesus Navarro (who also made an error, his 16th), was on base four times, going 2/3 with two walks, a double, an RBI and a run. Norberto Obeso was 2/5 with a walk and a double while Yorman Rodriguez was 2/4 with a double and a walk. Cristian Peguero was 2/5 with a double.

Wilfri Aleton allowed just one run over 5 1/3 innings, giving up seven hits and one walk but striking out six. Alvaro Galindo allowed just an unearned run, striking out six over 5 2/3 innings, allowing four hits. Jose Acosta took the loss, pitching in the 12th and retiring just one batter.

Player of the Game: Jesus Navarro, Wilfri Aleton and Alvaro Galindo
