Andrew Albers

The Buffalo Bisons played two close, low-scoring games on Tuesday night, splitting their double header with the Pawtucket Red Sox. In Game 1, Saskatchewanian Andrew Albers was outstanding, pitching six hitless innings. Unfortunately, the game was seven innings long and a leadoff double followed by a strikeout and an RBI single finished the game off in the seventh. Albers finished with an excellent line of 6 1/3 innings pitched with just one run on two hits against with four strikeouts. The offense just had two hits of their own, providing Albers absolutely no run support in the loss.

In Game 2, Scott Copeland filled Albers’s shoes and performed admirable, raising his ERA to 0.90 after giving up just one run on four hits and one walk in six innings with six strikeouts. Bo Schultz came on for the seventh to earn his third save of the season. The hitters showed a little more life with Chris Dickerson going 3/4 with an RBI and Matt Hague going 3/3 with a walk, driving the offense.

New Hampshire Fisher Cats 3, Trenton Thunder 4

Melky Mesa

The New Hampshire Fisher Cats fell after a close battle with the Trenton Thunder but couldn’t get a couple of runs back in the 4-3 loss. Taylor Cole got the start and was shelled for four runs on ten hits through 5 2/3 innings but he also struck out five and didn’t walk anyone. Greg Burke and Blake McFarland added 2 1/3 innings of scoreless relief to finish the game.

On the offensive side, the Fisher Cats mustered eight hits including two from Dwight Smith, Jr., Melky Mesa (just off the DL) and Kevin Nolan. K.C. Hobson took home a Golden Sombrero for striking out four times.

Roster Note: Melky Mesa was activated off the DL and Pierce Rankin was placed on the DL.

Dunedin Blue Jays 0, Daytona Tortugas 3

In Game 1 of the D-Jays’ double header, the Tortugas took the victory thanks to an anemic offense that produced only five hits (one each for Michael Saunder, Roemon Fields, Matt Dean, Derrick Loveless and Jorge Saez). Brad Allen started and went five innings, allowing three runs on four hits and three walks with six strikeouts before Chad Girodo struck out a pair in an inning of relief.

The D-Jays showed far more life in the second game as Jayson Aquino allowed just one unearned run over 5 2/3 innings on five hits and two walks. Wil Browning earned his fourth save, striking out three of the five batters he faced. The hitters were led by Matt Dean who had a single and a double while Mitch Nay drove in a pair of runs with a hit, going 1/3 with a walk. Fields hit a double, drove in a run and scored to account for the D-Jays’ fourth hit.

Lansing Lugnuts 8, Fort Wayne TinCaps 1

D.J. Davis

The 10-3 Lugnuts continue to roll, steamrolling the Fort Wayne TinCaps (after a series sweep last week) as they begin their visit to Cooley Law School Stadium. The Lugnuts got a tremendous start from Alberta’s Shane Dawson who allowed just one hit through five innings with seven strikeouts. Starlyn Suriel allowed the TinCaps’ only run in 3 1/3 innings of work and Phil Kish finished the game off with 2/3 of an inning.

While the offense didn’t kick into gear until the sixth inning, Tim Locastro had three hits and a stolen base (but was caught twice). Anthony Alford was activated off the DL and two-thirds of the “Soul Patrol” was out in Lansing’s outfield (with Ryan McBroom once again playing left field). Alford was 2/4 with a a double and a walk for the Lugnuts while D.J. Davis was 2/3 with a double, a triple and four RBI. McBroom was the only Lugnut who didn’t get at least one hit but he walked twice and scored both times.

Roster Notes: Anthony Alford was activated off the DL while Josh Almonte, who was injured in Monday’s game, was put on the 7-day DL.

Player of the Game: Shane Dawson and D.J. Davis
